Terra d'Oro Pinot Grigio Santa Barbara County 2016

External Review by We Speak Wine:

VINEYARD INFORMATION: This wine hails from Clarksburg, an appellation spanning three counties in the Sacramento Valley. The vineyard borders the Sacramento Delta, which ushers in cooling breezes from San Francisco Bay, creating just the right amount of maritime influence to deliver Pinot Grigio grapes with great depth of flavor and structure. WINEMAKING: The grapes for this Pinot Grigio were gently harvested by hand in the cool, early morning hours to preserve their bright flavor and acidity. Upon arrival at the winery, the fruit was handled with the utmost care and gently pressed to minimize the extraction of unwanted astringency and color from the skin and seeds. The clean juice, bursting with Pinot Grigio essence, was immediately fermented in stainless steel tanks at very low temperatures for more than 30 days to develop the variety’s bright, clean fruit character. TASTING NOTES: The 2016 Terra d’Oro Pinot Grigio entices with aromas of fresh cut pear and citrus blossom. This refined style of Pinot Grigio delivers juicy ripe pear and hints of citrus on the palate, balanced by a rich, smooth finish. This substantial—yet bright and refreshing—wine pairs beautifully with oysters Rockefeller or a citrus seafood ceviche. Composition: 90% Pinot Grigio 7% Chardonnay 3% Muscat Alcohol: 13.5% T.A.: 0.47 pH: 3.72

VINEYARD INFORMATION: Pinot Grigio, also known as Pinot Gris, is a genetic mutation of the Pinot Noir grape and was a popular planting in Burgundy and Champagne, France until the late 19th century. Pinot Grigio has garnered international recognition over the past decade as more winemakers are committed to making quality Pinot Grigio. The Terra d’Oro 2015 Pinot Grigio stands as a testament to this movement. The majority of our grapes are hand-picked at the winery’s Los Alamos vineyard in Santa Barbara County. The vineyard’s combination of well-drained, sandy soil and steep hillside plantings stress the vines just enough to bring intense varietal character to the fruit. Santa Barbara’s maritime influence supports a long and cool growing season, which is critical for the Pinot Grigio grapes to properly ripen and develop concentrated flavors. WINEMAKING: The grapes are gently hand-harvested in the early morning hours to ensure cooler temperatures during the long ride from Santa Barbara to Amador County. Upon arrival at the winery, the fruit is handled with care. The grapes go to press for gentle processing, minimizing the potential extraction of unwanted astringency and color from the skin and seeds. The clean Pinot Grigio juice is immediately sent to stainless steel fermenters and the Muscat and Chardonnay juice is fermented in French oak barrels (25% new). The Muscat grapes add a beautiful floral characteristic to the wine and the Chardonnay imparts buttered, oak influences to the fresh, fruit flavors. During fermentation, the juice is kept at very low temperatures for over a month, to support the bright, clean fruit character. TASTING NOTES: The Terra d’Oro 2015 Pinot Grigio is vivacious and exudes stunning mineral details. A bright nose filled with ripe pear and a touch of orange blossom leads to a smooth and lavish palate of citrus zest, juicy Bosc pears and hints of cardamom. The oak barrel fermentation imparts richness to this elegant wine, which is balanced by the crisp acidity and refreshing mineral undernotes. The richness of this wine affords a bit of creaminess, serve the Terra d’Oro 2015 Pinot Grigio with penne pasta topped with a light cream sauce and fresh greens. Composition: 93% Pinot Grigio 5% Chardonnay 2% Muscat Alcohol: 13.5% T.A.: 0.54 pH: 339
