What to Expect

Most famous as the predominant grape in the blended wines of Rioja, Tempranillo has emerged as a potential star in regions as disparate as Australia and California. Tempranillo generally produces medium-bodied wines with juicy acidity and bright raspberry fruit enlivened by notes of dusty earth, dry herbs and leather. Tempranillo is often blended with Grenache, Graciano, and Mazuelo (aka Carignan) in the production of red wine from the Rioja region of Spain.

Brilliant Purple in color with rich aromas of blueberries, violets and new leather rising from the glass. Comes off as rich yet elegant but with an animal hint to it that really tempts you to take that first sip. First impression in the mouth is of black currant and vanilla but then as it hits your mid palate it explodes with ripe raspberry fruit and an earthy minerality that leaves you feeling refreshed. The finish is super long and reminiscent of the raspberry fruit on the mid-palate. This wine is a conundrum. Pleasing in so many ways and on so many levels.

I've been drowning in Spanish reds lately and honestly, I wasn't super excited about this bottle. I find so many Toro wines big and hot and needing age, but was pleasantly surprised with Termes.
This is a manly wine - not in the "big overwhelming and power" way, but in these very masculine flavors. The leather, tobacco, cedar, dark fruit, and a hint of menthol (and I swear a purple floral note). It's a very masculine nose.
On the palate it has a lot of everything. Acidity is good, tannins are good but smooth.

Accessible and easy if you want it to be, interesting if you pay attention. A treat for many different drinkers.

I tried this wine and found it too strong. You really have to love a bold wine to enjoy this one. The flavor is consistent, like a straight line. But it's too overpowering for me. You can definitely taste the french oak - it's like someone shoved a burning barrel down your throat! :-)
Another guest at our party agreed - mixed feelings about this wine. Not too expensive ($26) but not super-special. I probably won't buy it again.
