Terlato Vineyards Shiraz Viognier 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Black raspberry red color. Complex with black fruit aromas (black cherry and black currant) some chocolate and toasty notes. Explosive black berry and pomegranate-like flavors with perfectly matched tannins that give the wine a long, lasting aftertaste. A treat to drink now and will age well for 7-10 years.

After 50 years in the wine industry, wine is still an inspiration for me. Every vintage brings an anticipation and excitement. After all, it’s a new birth. When I discovered Pinot Grigio in Italy, I was taken by its fresh aromas, its crispness, freshness and the way it paired effortlessly with foods. It was virtually unknown when I brought it to the United States in 1979. Not surprisingly, an entire nation of wine drinkers embraced Pinot Grigio for the same reasons I did. Today Pinot Grigio is the most requested wine in fine restaurants, and Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is the quality leader for the varietal. The U.S. was introduced to a new wine, as well as a new level of quality from Italy. I still feel about it today the same way I did the first time I tasted it. When I tasted Syrah from the Rhone Valley, dense, rich and aromatic, it immediately captured my fascination as well. It was a wine that I knew could stand alongside the best of another classic, Cabernet Sauvignon, because the taste profiles were similar: dense, rich and aromatic. We have fashioned our Syrah along those same lines. Of course, like most wine lovers, I have had a lifelong love affair with Bordeaux, the aristocracy of red wines, a blend of classic varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Angels’ Peak is the first of three blends we will introduce. When my sons and I decided to become vintners, our winemaking team found the right soil, and climate conditions that suited our needs. We planted some vineyards, bought others and Terlato Vineyards was born. It is small venture, but a sincere tribute to the wines and winemakers who have inspired us for decades. I regard these winemakers as artists and dreamers. I know this is true because now I am a winemaker myself. I want Terlato Vineyards to stand among the finest wines in the world, with those crafted by my friends. Read less

This starts off with a decidedly oaky nose but there is a nice black pepper tone and plenty of stemmy, almost floral notes, with a real oystershell mineral edge that helps the wild berry and dried plum fruit to pop. This is really tight up front with a very lean, crisp feel that is decidedly un-shirazy. There is plenty of fresh blueberry fruit with nice notes of pepper and very well integrated and unobtrusive oak. On the finish the fruit turns a bit more assertive and darker with a vivid plummy streak and a tiny bit of heat. This really has a compelling inner mouth perfume that is light, fresh and floral tinted. This is savory with a vibrant real edge to it. 93pts

The nose is decadent, featuring chocolate, strawberries, cedar, tobacco, and cinnamon. Good acidity and mild tannins on the mouth, with a long fruit finish and a touch of butter

A heady nose, with tart lime and quince notes. Nice florals and good mouthfeel. Cherry and cedar flavors before a bright fruit finish.

Wine Tasting NotesIntense red. Red berries, followed by hints of exotic fruit. Round structure with fine tannins displaying fruity characteristics.A spicy Shiraz from the vineyards of Central Victoria brightens with a boost of Viognier for aroma and balance, as often practiced in Frances most highly regarded appellation of the Northern Rhone Valley, Cote Rotie. The grapes grown in this Austrialian vineyard where planted on 19th century French rootstocks, another nod to the French tradition & influence in this new world wine. This wine is a collaborative effort between two renowned wine families; Chapoutier from the Rhne Valley in France, and Terlato family of Napa Valley in California.

With its trademark braille label and biodynamically grown grapes, this example of Chapoutier's diverse range leans toward the modern styling. 95% Shiraz with just a touch of Viognier.
