Terlan Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Sweet pear aromas on the nose are joined by hints of coconut, hazelnut, and quartz minerality. This is zesty in the mouth with nice fresh pear fruit with a hint of baked apple pie. Turning a touch loose on the palate, this retains a nice mineral base and hint of spice on the back end, finishing a touch on the short side with an earthy, almost herbal/stemmy edge and a hint of bitter almond on the finale, with a nice dash of mouthwatering salinity. 89pts

In Terlano, the wine-making tradition dates back more than 2000 years. Mild microclimatic conditions give the wines certain unique characteristics, thus adding a special flavor to them. Terlano’s unique position at the foot of Mount Tschöggel is a key to the development of the vineyards. The southfacing slopes are ideal for grape growing. The porphyry rocks accumulate warmth and the porous soil allows the water to drain, keeping the soil dry around the roots of the wines. The Cooperative of Terlano was founded in 1893. Today it has over 100 associates trained and specialized in natural viticulture. Together they keep the rich tradition with important innovative elements alive. The fruits of this accurated process are aged in modern cellars under strictly controlled conditions. Read less

Flowery and fruity aromas -- apples and melons. Noticeable effervesence on the tip of the tonge. Something of an apple flavor yields to lemony tartness. On the second and third tastes I am looking for the tartness and it is there, big time. Very refreshing as I usually hope for with Italian white wines.
