Half Camp Four half Learner 30 months in neutral wood, bottled in April Lightly leathery on the nose then smoky meaty and high toned with herb stems camphor, and a hint of fennel, licorice. A touch lighter than expected on entry with a nice texture that brings together fine grained, ripe tannins and good acids. There’s some vivid red fruit here and a bit of dried herb, dried tarragon with plenty of acid on the long finish which has a bit of a chocolaty aspect to it. 91pts

Tercero 06 Grenache - Santa Barbara County Tercero Vineyards is one of those gems we found while attending the Hospice du Rhone event in Paso Robles in 2008. They're a small, family owned and run vineyard, who put their heart and soul into each wine they produce -- each one will have characteristics unlike all the others. Watch Hill is a newer vineyard planted in Los Alamos, CA. (In fact, my release is the first single vineyard grenache released from this vineyard.) It has some pretty famous neighbors - Thompson Vineyard being the most famous - and has a cooler climate than many vineyards in Santa Ynez Valley. Because of this, the wines from here tend to be darker in color and tend to retain great natural acidity. This was my 'experimental lot' in 2006. The fruit came in very late in the season - at the end of the first week of November - and I ended up only getting 1/2 ton. I decided to go with about 1/3 whole clusters on this lot, and as fermentation began to kick in, I decided to 'go native' and not add any commercial yeast. I continued to monitor the ferment to make sure there were no off aromas, and this lot turned out to be the one that fermented to the dryest level of all of our ferments in 2006! This is a much more 'serious' grenache compared with the Camp 4. It is darker in color than the Camp 4 grenache; it has a similar aromatic profile, but is 'deeper' in makeup - more dark berry / cherry rather than raspberry . . . The whole clusters add an exotic pepper quality to the nose and an extra 'pop' to the finish. Though tasting wonderful now, this one will benefit from some cellar time. That said, we only made one barrel of this and therefore only have about 25 cases to sell . . .
