Tenute Rapitalà Piano Maltese Nero d'Avola 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

"Bright ruby red in color, this blend offers aromas blackberries, dried fruit, earth and spice. The palate is medium to full boasting moderate acidity and firm tannings, with flavors of forest fruit, vanilla and spice. A touch of oak transcends seemlessly to produce a long lasting finish. "

If you looking for a decadent, chocolatey Syrah, this is your bottle. Partial barrel fermentation imparts vanilla hints to this dark fruited, Rhône-like wine. Plush and modern but not grossly so.

The estateandrsquo;s 2005 Nuar, an unusual blend of Nero dandrsquo;Avola and Pinot Noir is remarkably successful. Fragrant aromatics lead to a core of sweet, almost-candied fruit as the wine reveals its delicate, understated personality. This too offers excellent length and lovely balance. Anticipated maturity: 2008andndash;2010.

I wouldn't usually think that Nero d'Avola and Pinot Noir would work well together in a blend, but the 2006 Nuhar is simply terrific. Candied cherries, flowers and sweet spices are some of the notes that flow from this generous, soft Sicilian red. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011.

When first poured, this wine is earthy and savory, with tight, gripping tannins. Air brings up a warm, almost cooked cherry flavor. For spaghetti. Best Buy.
