Reticent on the nose but obviously deep and layered with slow to emerge jammy, spicy fruit with a nuance of oaky cocoa and a touch of a tarry, very extracted tone. In the mouth this is rich and powerful with ripe, precise fruit that shows fine balance and good mineral cut. With air this gains a lovely black cherry tone with some youthfully chalky tannins that don’t detract from the wine and add length to the finish. 92pts

The Tenuta Sette Ponti has become famous for producing the opulent and rich Oreno Super Tuscan. Frequently overlooked is their very affordable and almost as fabulous Super Tuscan blend, Crognolo. About 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot from their hillside vineyards in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone. Yields are kept low with a green harvest in May and the grapes are carefully hand sorted in the winery befor a 20 day slow maceration. Aging is in French oak barrels for 12-18 months. The Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate both scored this 2008 92 points. Antonio Galloni said "The 2008 Crognolo is very pretty in this vintage. A persistent vein of minerality frames dark, jammy fruit in a medium-bodied, impeccably refined style for this property. Over time the wine’s inner perfume emerges, adding scents of roses, violets all things floral. A long, clean finish adds freshness. Crognolo is Sangiovese with a dollop of Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016." A tremendous value!
