Tenuta di Nozzole Chianti Classico Riserva Hrzn 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Review Online Review
Rated 90
Nozzole, a leading Chianti producer, turned out a wonderful Riserva in 2008. Although Chianti regulations require only 85% Sangiovese, Nozzole opts to use that grape exclusively in this Riserva. Beguiling smoky and earthy elements add a savory aspect to the expected ripe cherry-like notes of Sangiovese. An overall charming rusticity makes you come back for more. It's a fine choice for full-flavored pasta dishes or a grilled steak.

This wine shows crisp, ripe red berry and cherry fruit flavors and aromas sustained by a fresh, acidic note offset by classic Sangiovese notes of earth, mushrooms and leather, with an elegant tannic backbone.

Located north of the village of Greve in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, the Nozzole estate covers a striking, rugged, mountainous area of about 1,000 acres, a third of which is vines and olive groves. This Riserva is produced from exclusively estate grown fruit. 100% Sangiovese, yields are kept low and the grapes are hand harvested, destemmed and crushed. Fermentation is initiated on the skins in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by a maceration period to draw out color and tannins. The wine is racked into stainless steel tanks for malolactic fermentation before aging 16 months in Slavonian oak casks and 3 months in the bottle. This wine shows the unique character of this high altitude terroir. It has aromas of red black cherries with hints of spicy tobacco. These fruit flavors are ripe but balanced by earthy, meaty nots of wild mushrooms and tanned leather. The tannins are supple and caressing.

The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva Nozzole is a dark wine loaded with super-ripe fruit, smoke, mocha, tar and licorice. This is a pretty extroverted, flashy style for the year, but it works. The tannins are firm, yet beautifully integrated, especially on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. This is fresh and elegant, mixing cherry and berry flavors with earth and iron notes. Structured, just slightly dry on the finish. Drink now through 2015. 15,000 cases imported. -BS ** SOLD OUT **
