Blueberries pop on the nose and the alcohol is well integrated. This offers up some obvious leafy cassis in a decidedly cool, greenish nose that has well integrated cedary oak, a fleshy tone an building notes of smoke and char. In the mouth this has a rich feel with lovely fresh structure obvious tannin and integrated acidity. Frontloaded with dark baking spices over which is a top note of Cab Franc mintiness. This is awfully young and while richly fruited it is loaded with aggressive tanins which clamp down on the finish. Leave it be. 2012-2020

The gorgeous 2004 Ornellaia is a great way to start this tasting. A lively dark ruby, it is a vibrant effort bursting with expressive aromatics and layered, well-delineated fruit, showing much purity on the palate and closing with a long, finessed finish. Readers hoping to catch this wine s full array of nuances will have to wait at least another few years as the wine remains quite primary today. This exquisite effort is not to be missed. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. 95/Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019.

Closed at first behind a wall of tannin, this needs several hours to reveal its full potential. While those tannins remain strong, the flavor of the fruit - perfectly ripened to flavors of fig and black cherries during a long, even growing season - is what powers the wine. Elegantly composed of 60 percent cabernet sauvignon, 25 percent merlot and lesser amounts of franc and petit verdot, the 2004 is a classic vintage of Ornellaia. Cellar this and watch it develop over the next 10 to 20 years.

Ornellaia mdash; a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from a 225-acre estate overseen by Lamberto Frescobaldi mdash; remains among the flagship wines from the rapidly developing Bolgheri area on the Tuscan coast. The warm Mediterranean coastal climate tends to favor international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot over Sangiovese, the staple grape of most other winemaking areas in Tuscany. This is the best Ornellaia since the 1997 vintage.

This is a hopelessly gorgeous wine with so much energy, intensity, density and good cheer. The superb ensemble mdash; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot mdash; delivers chocolate fudge, ripe cherry, rhubarb, cola, tobacco and cedar wood. Itrsquo;s tight and supple, with seamless harmony and excellent succulence on the finish. But itrsquo;s that incredible intensity that truly sets this wine apart.

The 2007 Ornellaia is remarkably open and accessible, very much in keeping with the personality of the vintage. Clean, minerally notes frame a core of silky, perfumed dark fruit, mocha, spices, licorice, grilled herbs and leather that impresses for its exceptional length. Tasted next to the 2007 Le Serre Nuove, the 2007 Ornellaia shows more muscle (from the higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon), but in terms of pure quality the wines are very close. The 2007 is not a big, massive Ornellaia, but rather a wine built on elegance and finesse, both of which are on full display. The 2007 should drink well with a minimum of cellaring, but whether it will make old bones remains a question mark at this point. The 2007 Ornellaia is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

Consistently among Italy's top-scoring wines, this vintage of the celebrated Ornellaia (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) is a gorgeous expression of the very best of European enology. It delivers extraordinary richness, succulence and intensity, but remains elegant to the end. Aromas include black cherry, spice and dark chocolate. Imported by Folio Fine Wine Partners.

Winemaker's Notes:

Resulting from a vintage during which Merlot ripened perfectly, the 2004 Masseto displays great aromatic complexity, with the typical prune and black cherry aromas coupled with floral overtones and subtle oak. On the palate the richness of the ripe fruit is supported by a tightly woven, ample tannic structure and fresh acidity. The balance between opulence, power and elegance makes it a classic expression of its terroir, unique to both Bolgheri and Tuscany.
