Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia Red Bordeaux Blend Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 2004
Resulting from a vintage during which Merlot ripened perfectly, the 2004 Masseto displays great aromatic complexity, with the typical prune and black cherry aromas coupled with floral overtones and subtle oak. On the palate the richness of the ripe fruit is supported by a tightly woven, ample tannic structure and fresh acidity. The balance between opulence, power and elegance makes it a classic expression of its terroir, unique to both Bolgheri and Tuscany.
Editorial Reviews for Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia Red Bordeaux Blend Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia
Blueberries pop on the nose and the alcohol is well integrated. This offers up some obvious leafy cassis in a decidedly cool, greenish nose that has well integrated cedary oak, a fleshy tone an building notes of smoke and char. In the mouth this has a rich feel with lovely fresh structure obvious tannin and integrated acidity. Frontloaded with dark baking spices over which is a top note of Cab Franc mintiness. This is awfully young and while richly fruited it is loaded with aggressive tanins which clamp down on the finish. Leave it be. 2012-2020

Medium body and acid. Medium fruit, oak and tannin. Green vegetables, cherries, brown spices, pipe tobacco. Simple fruit with strong greenish nuances is balanced with ample tannins.
This Tuscan gem is black in color, with complex aromas of black currants, minerals and wet earth. Full-bodied, with lots of tannins, but very polished. Long, long finish. Super well-made - a great Ornellaia. Best after 2004.
Pretty, well-made wine offering cassis and herb aromas and flavors; medium in body and tannins followed by a silky finish. Drinkable now but better in 1996.
Wow. Currants, berries, cherries and minerals, but all subtlety. Full- to medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. Complex wine. However, a significant price hike, which follows the purchase of the estate by the Mondavi and Frescobaldi families, is disappointing. Best after 2005.
The gorgeous 2004 Ornellaia is a great way to start this tasting. A lively dark ruby, it is a vibrant effort bursting with expressive aromatics and layered, well-delineated fruit, showing much purity on the palate and closing with a long, finessed finish. Readers hoping to catch this wine s full array of nuances will have to wait at least another few years as the wine remains quite primary today. This exquisite effort is not to be missed. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. 95/Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019.
The 1999 Ornellaia demonstrates immediately the superiority of the vintage in dark, blackish color, powerful and expansive nose of cassis, graphite, tar, and Mediterranean herbs, and its rich, concentrated, and deep flavors, sizeable but very supple as well. Drink 2005-2022.
Dark ruby-purple in color, with complex aromas of dark chocolate, cola, vanilla, cedar and currant. Full-bodied yet ultrarefined, with dense, seamless, caressing tannins. Everything is in the right proportion. Superb. Cabernet Sauvginon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best after 2009.
