Tenuta dell'Ornellaia:
Production dictated by the nature of the vintage, hand-harvesting only when the grapes are fully ripe, the grapes of the individual vineyards fermented separately, in the respect of a unique and precious terroir. These are just a few of the choices made by Ornellaia, following a philosophy that aims for quality from the beginning. Thanks to the women and men who throw their hearts, heads and so... Read more

From the first official tasting outside of the estate. The nose begins with oak, toast, and sugar notes though they are moderate in intensity and are joined by a floral note, cassis fruit, cedar as well as tar, asphalt, smoke, molasses, and gingersnaps. In the mouth the wine offers up a seamless, medium bodied imoression that features refined tannins, nuanced oak, hard blackberry candy fruit, a bit of bitterness that cuts the finish short. Needs time to integrate, at this point the nose is better than the palate. 2008-2010

Interesting dark ruby red in the glass, a lovely generous nose filled with mocha, chocolate cherries, spices and some light oak. Surprisingly mid bodied but drinking very well, nice length to the finish, nice rich mouth feel, well structured and a pleasant palate flavour profile of blueberries and coffee. Drinking too well today, if such a thing can be claimed!

Gorgeous aromas of currant and coffee, with hints of chocolate. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a lovely finish. Wonderfully balanced. Wow. The second wine of Ornellaia. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Vigorous, broad palate but unsettles and awkward now. a slow developer but the length and fresh fruit finish suggest potential. 2012–2025.

A Super Tuscan based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. A full-bodied, hearty red wine that's impressive all around.

Exuberant and opulent plum, spices and dark cherry flavours with velvety tannins and firm acid backbone. Young and gorgeous with great complexity and depth - one that will age beautifully. Drink: 2013–2027.

The medium-bodied 2005 Ornellaia shows plenty of delineation in its dark cherries, blueberries, spices, minerals and crushed rocks. The 2005 doesn't have the detail of the 2004 or the richness of the 2006, but it does offer notable finesse and clarity in an understated style for this wine. My impression is that this will be a relatively early-maturing vintage of Ornellaia, which is not a bad thing, considering the age-worthiness of the two vintages which surround it. In 2005 Ornellaia is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. It is a big success in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. RP

Full ruby-red. Youthful, perfumes nose hints at cherry, flowers, licorice and lead pencil. Dense, brooding and powerful, with superb depth and clarity of cherry, cassis, mineral and floral flavors. An aristocratic, backward, gripping Ornellaia that finishes with explosive length and building tannins. If the '98 is feminine, this is distinctly masculine. Still an infant.

Dark ruby-purple in color, with complex aromas of dark chocolate, cola, vanilla, cedar and currant. Full-bodied yet ultrarefined, with dense, seamless, caressing tannins. Everything is in the right proportion. Superb. Cabernet Sauvginon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best after 2009.
