Rating: 17/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Very dark crimson. Not the most intense nose - quite mineral but extremely opulent. Napa rides again! Very sweet. Black cherries. At the moment all I can sense is intense sweetness plus a bit of fine tannin. Quite alcoholic. 14.5% CS:M:CF 65:30:5 157,000 bottles

This vintage epitomizes the plump and juicy character of Italy's modern wines. The nose here offers up scents of warm blueberries with toasty, spicy nuances of fine French oak. In the mouth one finds lots of upfront fruit as this wine has not had time to develope the nuances and layers that will come with an additional 4-7 years of cellaring.

Rating: 18/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Very, very ripe, heady, extremely attention-grabbing nose. Glorious opulence. Ink and satin on the palate and definite sweetness. There's lots of fine tannin but the wine has the fruit to carry it. Pretty damn good with a very slightly dry end.

The great 2000 vintage at Tenuta dell' Ornellaia produced one of the most extraordinary vintage Masseto ever made. The wine is rich with profound depth. The aromas, which continue to evolve, remind us of the complexity of the grapes at harvest. The tannins are exceptionally rich and literally fill the palate indicating a magnificent aging potential. 100% Merlot.

This 63 acre vineyard consists of various clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. The wines are separately aged for one year in French barrels before being blended to achieve an elegant yet firm style balancing fruit, acidity, oak and tannic backbone. Spicy and full of cassis, tobacco and coffee aromas. Texture and mouthfeel are what this wine is all about; it is plush like velvet carpet. Deep, satisfying flavors of plum, black currant and vanilla lead into an ultrasmooth finish that is as clean as a hospital emergency room. -Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Wines of 2002
