What to Expect

Sangiovese's claim to fame is its role as the heart of Chianti, Brunello and many Super Tuscan wines though it is gaining ground as a varietal wine around the globe. When grown in a suitable location the grape's soft tannins, succulent acidity and moderately intense cherry and herb flavors make Sangiovese very easy to drink as well as supremely versatile at the dinner table.

Winemakers Notes

The grapes were de-stemmed and crushed before being introduced partially in wooden fermentors of medium capacity, and partially in stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation took place at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Maceration continued for a period of 20-25 days after which the wine was introduced into new french oak barriques (50%) and second passage barriques (50%) where it completed its malolactic fermentation. Each grape variety and each vineyard ‘lot’ was aged separately.
The wine remained in barriques in the temperature controlled cellars at Tenuta read more...

Rating: 4/5 - As reviewed by Decanter Huge, structured wine but with big fruit beneath the tannins. The finish is a touch astringent.

This Tuscan gem is black in color, with complex aromas of black currants, minerals and wet earth. Full- bodied, with lots of tannins, but very polished. Long, long finish. Super well-made?a great Ornellaia. Best after 2004. 11,415 cases made. -... Wine Spectator. A Proprietary Blend wine from Tuscany in Italy. 1997 Ornellaia, Tenuta dell' Ornellaia 750ml

Rating: 91/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 116, September/October 2004 Bright, youthful red-ruby. Very ripe, complex aromas of black fruits, violet, exotic spices, licorice and humus. Then hugely full and sweet in the mouth, but with a faint greenness. Finishes with big, slightly rustic tannins-less fine-grained than usual for this estate. A classic wine from a hot year in which the ripening came in a rush.

Inky color still, with a jammy and smoky nose showing licorice and vanilla aromas. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and velvety tannins, it still seems structured, closed and tight. Needs many more years in the bottle. Even better than I originally t... Wine Spectator. A Merlot wine from Tuscany in Italy. 1997 Ornellaia, Tenuta dell' Masseto 750ml

WA 93 (4/2007): The estate’s 1997 Ornellaia (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc) combines the large-framed opulence of the 1999 with the slightly more herbal notes found in the 1998. It is a big, plump wine packed with layers of fruit and well-integrated oak, showing outstanding length and the telltale note of sweetness on the finish that defines this vintage. Despite its approachable nature today, the 1997 appears to have enough structure to drink well for another decade. Both the 1997 Ornellaia and Masseto enjoyed a very strong showing in this tasting. 93/Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017.
