Tensley Syrah Santa Barbara County 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

This vintage Tensley has done a little something different with the Santa Barbara County blend by bringing the cool climate Mormann Vineyard into the mix. Located in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, Mormann's mild days and cool nights lend its fruit notes of cedar, black and white pepper and spice. The rest of the fruit comes from the Thompson, Tierra Alta, Colson Canyon and Camp Four vineyards. This wine is drinking very well already but should age nicely over the next 3 to 5 years. 1,740 cases produced.

The label on this page is not accurate since this Syrah is not exclusively from the Colson Canyon Vineyard but from 5 different vineyards in Santa Barbara county. Smells like red tart cherries, cantaloupe and fresh gaminess with a hint of spice. This well balanced Syrah had juicy fruitiness of dark cherries and cantaloupe with good notes of tobacco and reminds me of fresh game. Sharp tannins and probably need some time to age to soften them a little. Well made. For more information, please visit http://dionyshius.blogspot.com/2012/07/tensley-syrahs.html

Grabbed this at Chambers moving sale for $29.99. Super dark color. The nose didn't budge a bit, nor did the palate other than a little sweet blackberry and blueberry. Packed it up for another night.Another night: wow! What a different animal altogether. Pretty medium dark color. Great floral nose with blueberry pie, dark blackberries and anise. The palate had it all: Wonderful dark blackberries, deep blueberries, pomegranate, camphor, wet stones, and leather to star. It kept giving and giving. Some faint white pepper was thrown in forgood meaure. A long silky mid-palate with a fine tannin level. Some acid was present as was just a touch of heat. This is a serious wine meant to be seriously cellared. At least 3-5 years, but then.....

This wine came highly recommended with the description of it being fruity and jammy. They were right. It's big, full body, and jammy fruit. That said, that's about the extent of this wine. People seem to like syrah from Santa Barbara. Good for them. I don't see the appeal.

The grapes for the SBC Syrah were sourced from the same five vineyards we used to make the 2010: Camp 4, Mormann, Tierra Alta, Thompson and Colson Canyon. Robert Parker called the 2010 SBC Syrah "one of the finest values in Syrah." The 2011 was made in exactly same way, and we believe it is equally as good as its predecessor. This wine is ripe and full-bodied with well-integrated acidity and tannins. Look for up-front notes of purple plum, blackberries and black cherries complemented by savory roasted meats and lavender. Drink this wine now or age it over the next three to five years - winery

One of the finest values in Syrah is Tensely's 2010 Syrah Santa Barbara (100% Syrah aged in neutral oak barrels). The 500 cases of this amazing offering should disappear quickly given what's in the bottle. A dense purple color is accompanied by notes of roasted meats, lavender, cassis, blackberries, charcoal and ink. This ripe, full-bodied, dense wine should drink well for 7-8 years, possibly longer.

This year's Santa Barbara County Syrah was sourced from three distinct vineyards: Camp 4 (40%), Colson Canyon (40%) and Tierra Alta (20%). The Camp 4 brings in bright notes of raspberry, red stone fruits, and minerals while the Colson Canyon introduces a deep, jammy core of black fruits and berries with hints of chocolate, violets and smoked meat. The Tierra Alta brings it all together by adding floral notes to the nose and a streak of earth to the lush, smooth palate. Drink this wine now or age it over the next 3 to 5 years. - Winery ** Only 6 in Stock **

Offers wonderful complexity, elegance and finesse, with a lively mix of ripe, vivid blueberry, wild berry and huckleberry flavors that are intense, full-bodied, focused and direct, ending with a subtle dash of berry fruit and fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2018.
