Tensley Syrah Santa Barbara County 2006
Our Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah is the backbone of the Tensley Wines program. As in 2005. more than half of our production comes from this highly sought-after vineyard. As always, the Colson Canyon is the only one of our wines to see any new oak. This vintage was aged in 20% new and 20% one-year-old French barrels to add a bit of sweet toast and vanilla to the finish of this already complex wine. Saturated and ruby/black, the Colson is rich in jammy fruit, chocolate and pepper yet maintains its integrity as a balanced wine by harmoniously integrating tannin and acitdity. Drink this wine now or age it up to 15 years.
Grabbed this at Chambers moving sale for $29.99. Super dark color. The nose didn't budge a bit, nor did the palate other than a little sweet blackberry and blueberry. Packed it up for another night.Another night: wow! What a different animal altogether. Pretty medium dark color. Great floral nose with blueberry pie, dark blackberries and anise. The palate had it all: Wonderful dark blackberries, deep blueberries, pomegranate, camphor, wet stones, and leather to star. It kept giving and giving. Some faint white pepper was thrown in forgood meaure. A long silky mid-palate with a fine tannin level. Some acid was present as was just a touch of heat. This is a serious wine meant to be seriously cellared. At least 3-5 years, but then.....
This wine came highly recommended with the description of it being fruity and jammy. They were right. It's big, full body, and jammy fruit. That said, that's about the extent of this wine. People seem to like syrah from Santa Barbara. Good for them. I don't see the appeal.
