Telmo Rodriguez Rioja Altos Lanzaga 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Telmo Rodriguez 2009 Rioja Altos Lanzaga is sourced from biodynamically farmed Tempranillo vineyards that are over 70 years old, fermented in open wooden vats and aged in oak casks and barriques for 18 months. This elegant Rioja offers dark fruit, mocha amd coffee character with superb balance and a stunning finish."The 2009 Altos de Lanzaga has a more introverted bouquet than the 2007: tight coiled with fine delineation and purity. The plate is beautifully defined with great weight and intensity without compromising upon its elegance and poise. Like the 2007, there is a Burgundy like allure to this weight, with tremendous clarity on the finish. Stunning is a word that springs to mind" -Wine Advocate (96 Points)"The last Altos that was this good came in 2004; this vintage is on par with superb wine courtesy of deep plum, mocha and marzipan aromas. This is a modern Rioja with impeccable balance despite being huge and tannic. Flavors of cassis, black cherry and dark plum operate off a mocha base, while the finish is toasty and chocolaty, with a note of black coffee. Best from 2015-2024." -Editors' Choice Wine Enthusiast (94 Points)

This is how the business started, originally under the name of Compañía de Vinos de La Granja. The name was a declaration of intent: it made it clear that the company would be producing more wines in the future and contained a homage to La Granja, the famous glassworks, a centre of outstanding Spanish craftwork that has all but disappeared.
