Teliani Valley Pirosmani Semi-Dry 2007

Member Review by lucto:

Nose: strong. sweetness is perceptible in the nose already. lots of fruits ( raspberries, currants, cherries) plus some specific semi-dry note i would call herbal/nougat. Mouth: no surprise after olfactory analisis. Medium bodied. Sugar balanced with slightly peppery tannins (could be with acidity, like in some better semi wines). herbal/nougat note is the reason I dislike the wine - all bad, cheap and semi-type wines have it. But still this one is more expensive and much better than usual herbal/nougat semi. If one likes semi-dry wines I would really recomend it, so my rating goes one glass up. Tried in April 2010.

The building of the winery was originally commissioned in the 1880s by Michael Romanov, brother of the Russian Emperor, and was the home of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze. In 1891, Bordeaux winemaker Merl Antoin Mossano was brought in to produce their first wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon he grew and produced there was a huge hit, especially with the Emperor. Other wines and brandies soon went into production.    In 2004, Teliani received a grant from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to update their facility, which further boosted the quality of the wines. In 2005, they founded a sommelier school on the premises. Today, still red, white and sparkling wines are produced here from international and local grapes, as well as brandies.  Read less
