Te Mata Coleraine Cabernet Merlot 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

*97 points, JamesSuckling.com, November 2015* *19.5+ Raymond Chan* *98 Points, Bob Campbell MW* Te Mata is New Zealand's oldest winery, established in the early 1890's. Today they are one of the most awarded and critically accaimed producers, with the 'Coleraine' being their flagship wine. From the depths of its saturated inky appearance, Coleraine ’13 is a commanding statement of the vintage. Its powerful attack of beautifully ripened blackberries and black plums integrates with an accompanying surge of immediate tannin which quickly becomes the focus as the wine flows across the palate. A fabulous wine which can compete with classed growth Bordeaux. 'At the risk of this being a cliché, this Coleraine would give Bordeaux classified growths a run for their money. It is a powerful and intense wine, and yet remains elegant and precise. Richly aromatic, giving ripe, black sweet fruit on entry and an attractive herbal note. Densely fruited on the mid palate followed up with abundant sinewy tannins. There's lots of new French oak used in the making of this wine, but it's integrated, adding Christmas cake spice flavors to the mix. Long persistence. This is a baby and is going nowhere fast and will continue to develop for 10 years plus. 56% Cab Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 14% Cab Franc'. Rebecca Gibb, JamesSuckling.com, March 2015
