Te Awa Sauvignon Blanc Hawkes Bay 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

An alternative expression of this variety, blended with a small amount of Semillon and a portion is barrel fermented. This has created a beautiful and distinctive Sauvignon Blanc which combines delicious flavours and complexity of texture with a refreshing lively finish.

Our philosophy is to achieve balanced wines, reflecting the grapes from which they are made and having the individuality of our vineyard site. Embracing the time proven traditions of the worlds great winemakers, we harvest and vinify the different parcels of our vineyard separately, which gives us small variations in flavour and texture and thus more options when it comes to blending. We aim for a synergistic effect, where the wine will be better than the sum of the individual parts. Even in our single variety wines we blend different components from different parts of the vineyard to achieve the most complete and balanced wine. Once blended, the components marry and age together, evolving towards harmony as one wine - the best possible expression of our vineyards unique character. We see ourselves as working with nature so that our wines are the unification of all the elements; our soil, cultivars, climate, and people. Read less

This medium-bodied Sauvignon Blanc is soft and lush in style, with prominent stone-fruit flavors (apricots?) that hint at sweetness. Drink now. - J.C. Wine Enthusiast. A Sauvignon Blanc wine from Hawkes Bay in New Zealand. 2009 Te Awa Sauvignon Blanc 750ml

Tasting Notes:

Tis wine is inspired by a recent visit to the Margret River wine region in Western Australia. As a region there are many similarities to Hawkes Bay: maritime climate, similar temperatures and varietal mix planted. I’m sure the Margret River winemakers were originally inspired by white Bordeaux. I’ve been in turn inspired by the improvement, not the original. Semillon perhaps contributes more to the youthful impression than Sauvignon Blanc does. Certainly on the nose floral notes and citrus peel liſt the wine. On the palate Sauvignon Blanc dominates with its tropical melon richness and weight. As the wine ages I would expect it to look flinty, as the primary floral notes give way, and ‘honey-up’ as the wine takes on time. Don’t judge this wine too early, its best years are ahead.

An alternative expression of this variety, blended with a small amount of Semillon and a portion is barrel fermented. This has created a beautiful and distinctive Sauvignon Blanc which combines delicious flavours and complexity of texture with a refreshing lively finish.
