External Reviews for Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Sweet Wine Port
Fruity, lacking the power of some vintages of Vargellas, but more than making up with richness, sweetness and delicious violet perfumes. There is some cranberry jelly flavor, an edge of dryness and firmness in the fruit, but it's more about ripeness.
Nuanced and firm as a young Vargellas should be, this '95 has true vintage quality. It's deeply concentrated and quite dry, with a dark fruit character completely wound up in the tart acidity and smooth, bitter chocolate tannins. the length of flavor and the potent structure show this to be more of a long-term wine than most of what '95 has to offer. it should be at its best between ten and twenty years from the vintage.
Following on the heels of this winery's stellar 1994, which shared honors as Wine of the Year in 1997, is this single-quinta vintage Port from Taylor Fladgate's excellent Vargellas vineyard.
Opaque blackish hue with a ruby purple rim. Moderately full-bodied. Balanced acidity. Highly extracted. Moderately tannic. Black fruits, licorice, lacquer. Quite aromatic with a flavorful, fruit-accented palate feel. Somewhat lighter in style, though still quite rich, this wine should be quite approachable on 10 years or so.
Winemaker's Notes:Inky black with a vivid purple rim. Compact and stylish nose, with intense aromas of blackcurrant and wild berries tightly wrapped around a dark nucleus of liquorice and treacle. Th
A big, voluptuous wine - decadence in a bottle. Sports a brilliant magenta, purple color and intense aromas of plums and berries with hints of flowers. It's medium- to full-bodied, with chunky, velvety-tannin mouthfeel and a long aftertaste of chocolate and fruit. Lovely.
Plush, with lots of iron and mineral notes to the cassis and blueberry flavors, which feature some peppery notes. Medium-grained tannins fill the finish, with plenty of dark chocolate. Best from 2013 through 2018.
This is a single quinta wine, made in exactly the same way as Taylor`s Vintage Port, but using only the grapes from this individual property, trodden on the estate. Only small quantities are made, and only in very good years. Many experts believe Taylor`s Single Quinta Vintage Ports to be better than other companies declared years. The name of Taylor`s is more of an assurance than the year.Taylor`s has owned the beautiful estate of Vargellas for over a century, and it is acknowledged as one of the great vineyards of the world. It has the highest percentage of old vines of any quinta in the Douro, 60% being over 75 years old. Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Ports are ready to drink from ten years, but will go on developing for another twenty years or so - almost as long as Taylors declared Vintages.
