Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage Porto 2009

Member Review by duncan 906:

This bottle of port was a gift.Port wine is from the Douro valley in northern Portugal and takes its name from the City of Oporto at the mouth of that river. It is a fortified wine because brandy is added to arrest the fermentation process. The late bottled vintage style of port originated at the Taylor Fladgate port house in 1970.Wines from a single year are bottled between four and six years after harvest having spent the intervening years in oak barrels. The idea is to have a wine that is ready to drink immediately without decanting and a wine that can be drunk weeks after opening. My bottle is a blend of ports made from grapes grown in Taylor Fladsgate's own vineyards and bought in grapes. The varieties used are tinta roriz, tinta barraca, touriga francasa and touriga nacional although I do not know in what proportions. These varieties are all traditional Portugese grapes used in port production.I started my bottle last night and I must report that I did enjoy it.There is plenty of a plum and cherry style fruit there along with cinamon, date and raisin flavours. It is fairly sweet but not over sweet and I did notice the alchol [ abv of 20%] although it is also fairly smooth.
