What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

"Red Wine Syrah/Shiraz by Tatiarra from Australia. The Cambrian Shiraz represents a wonderful expression of the Tatiarra Vineyard's terroir and is a classic, big Heathcote Shiraz. The grapes for this wine were cropped at 1.6 tonnes per acre, producing a wine of immense power and concentration. "

Reviews

IWC 90 (8/2005): Dark ruby. Flamboyant aromas of sweet blackberry, cassis, dark raspberry and candied licorice, with notes of violet, mocha and sexy oak spice. Very syrah in the mouth, with flavors of creme de mure, black olive, roasted coffee, sweet pepper and light camphor. Supple and round on the finish, with fully buffered, sweet tannins.

Wine Skinny

Big and concentrated, with intense red currant, raspberry, black pepper and dark chocolate flavors that linger on a focused finish. Integrated tannins and a mineral note grace the smooth mouthfeel. Ready to drink now and over the next ten-plus years.
