Tasca d'Almerita Red Blend Contea di Sclafani Rosso del Conte 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Bright ruby-red color, this wine offers layered notes of cherry, mulberry and raspberry. On the palate, it is complex and supple, with ripe berry flavors framed by silky tannins. The right choice for eggplant parmigiana, pasta with meat sauce, meatballs, sausages, pizza and roasted meats. A delicious Sicilian red at a great value!

The Tasca d'Almerita estate is situated in the Sclafani countryside, between the provinces of Palermo and Caltanissetta, near the former stronghold of Regaleali: 1200 hectars of land were reduced to 500 following the agrarian reform in 1950. The 400 hectares of vineyards are between landscapes of almond trees and olive trees, and among this expanse there are wheat, oat and eucalyptus plants, that create a rural landscape of rare charm and beauty. It is a striking and unmistakable site, which enjoys a microclimate ideal for wine cultivation thanks to an altitude that varies between 400 to 750 meters and temperature range that averages about 15 Celsius degrees at night. The careful safeguarding of the grapes aromatic properties, which give the wines a characteristic elegance and distinctiveness, is a result of a rather late maturation process, as well as careful vine selection and solid winemaking, practiced in this area since 1100. Another great Italian wine introduced to us at Babbo. This wine has many of the characteristics we love, deep, rich stone fruit, cherry, chocolate. Smooth, long tannic finish.

Only had a few tastes of this wine and didn't have any spare moment to ponder on it, but was an incredibly pleasurable experience, and this one still has another 10-15yrs on it. Absolutely enamored by the life of this at 21yrs of age!

Saturated dark ruby. Explosive berry, nut and caramel nose, with some oak spice. Sweet, dense and very concentrated. Like a superripe fruit essence, with an eau de vie character and port-like notes of chocolate, earth and raisin. Fat and chewy, but with solid underlying structure. Very firm finish.

Juicy black fruit up front, with a clean, floral, mineral undertone. Medium-bodied, with tightly packed tannins and a long, sleek finish. Very well done. Nero d'Avola and Perricone. Best after 2007.

Count Tasca d'Almerita makes Sicily's most elite wines, blends of indigenous grapes such as Nerello, Mascalese and Perricone. Aged one year in chestnut barrels. Superb match with grilled or roasted red meats, excellent with game and hard, sharp cheeses.

The 2003 vintage yielded an especially concentrated, opulent Rosso del Conte. This rich wine is packed with the essence of blackberry jam, cassis and sweet toasted oak. Most of the wine's appeal is in its up-front, generous nature as the tannins dry out a bit on the back end. Rosso del Conte is a blend of Nero d'Avola and other indigenous varieties. It spends 18 months in oak (80% new). Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018. Tasca d'Almerita is one of Sicily's leading wineries. The estate's Rosso del Conte was among the first wines that ushered in the era of important reds from the South.
