Tasca d'Almerita Lamuri Nero d'Avola IGT 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Intense ruby-red in color, Lamùri offers lush aromas of black cherry, blackberry, vanilla, tobacco and wild herbs. On the palate, this wine is incredibly rich, with velvety tannins and a refreshing acidity. Highly recommended with Mediterranean fare, such as pasta, roasted lamb and barbecued kebobs or ribs.

The Tasca d'Almerita estate is situated in the Sclafani countryside, between the provinces of Palermo and Caltanissetta, near the former stronghold of Regaleali: 1200 hectars of land were reduced to 500 following the agrarian reform in 1950. The 400 hectares of vineyards are between landscapes of almond trees and olive trees, and among this expanse there are wheat, oat and eucalyptus plants, that create a rural landscape of rare charm and beauty. It is a striking and unmistakable site, which enjoys a microclimate ideal for wine cultivation thanks to an altitude that varies between 400 to 750 meters and temperature range that averages about 15 Celsius degrees at night. The careful safeguarding of the grapes aromatic properties, which give the wines a characteristic elegance and distinctiveness, is a result of a rather late maturation process, as well as careful vine selection and solid winemaking, practiced in this area since 1100. Reddish brown and opaque in color, this wine had a pretty incredible nose. It was earthy, toasty (like raisins dried under the sun), plush juicy fruits of ripe red cherry and cantaloupe with hints of dried Shitake mushrooms. At first sip, I thought it needed time to open up. But upon some decanting, the butterscotch, toasted caramel, plush juiciness just took over! Well balanced with smooth silky tannins, it had some spiciness going on with good full mouthfeel. Although there was a slight astringency from tannins at the end, it felt like I was tasting the grape seed which was an experience in itself. I was surprised to know that this was 100% Nero D'Avola (one of the indigenous grape varietal of Italy) because it was rather different from the one I tasted some time back. I was gifted by a friend the same bottle so I cannot wait to have it again! For more on the tasting, please visit http://dionyshius.blogspot.com/2012/06/lamuri-dalmerita-2008.html

The 2005 Nero d'Avola Lamuri offers gorgeous purity in its perfumed almost-Pinot Noir-like fruit, mint and spices with an attractive plumpness on the palate and superb overall balance. It is a terrific effort that demonstrates the level of excellence Nero d'Avola can reach with attentive work in the vineyard. The wine also benefits from a relatively high-altitude site. The cool evenings provide balance to the hot daytime temperatures resulting in a wine of uncommon elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2015.

This winery, better known as Tasca drsquo;Almerita, has been a consistent entry into The Wine Advocatersquo;s best buy reports for their value-priced wines from Sicily. The 2004 Lamuri IGT (made from 100% Nero drsquo;Avola) spent 8ndash;10 months in small French oak. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by hints of loamy soil, blackberries, cassis, tar, and anise. Medium-bodied, with delicious fruit, soft tannins, and a supple finish, it should drink well for 1ndash;2 years.

Here is a lusciously concentrated and inky red packed tight with big flavor: plum, fruit preserve, spice, clove, cinnamon and nutmeg. It's sweet at the core with spice bread flavors in the mouth.

Immediately appealing with its bright ruby color, frutti di bosco flavors and fresh pine forest aromas, this wine packs plenty of stuffing onto its lithe frame. It feels simultaneously modern and ancient, a rich savor that's firmly Mediterranean. A sleek partner for grilled rack of lamb.
