Tardieu-Laurent Côtes du Rhône Guy Louis 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

“The old stand-by of Michel Tardieu is the 2009 Cotes du Rhone Guy Louis. This wine is about 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, all coming from three sectors – Cairanne, Rasteau, and the vast ocean of mostly Grenache-based vineyards known as the Plan de Dieu. Impressively endowed, medium to full-bodied, with ripe red and black fruits, camphor, barbecue spices, and underbrush, the wine is textured, rich, and very impressive. It should also drink well for 4-5 years…90-92” Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 10/10 "This is nicely toasty but well-integrated, with lots of licorice sna and roasted apple wood notes melding into the core of fleshy plum sauce and curant preserve flavors. The long, rich finish stays detailed...90" WS 05/12 "More Tardieu-Laurent than Côtes du Rhône, with hallmark exotic, nearly tropical notes suggestive of toasted coconut, vanilla and apricot. It’s full bodied and plush in texture, with a long, cedary and velvety finish. Drink it over the next few years...90" WE 10/12 "A brilliant Côtes du Rhône, the 2009 Tardieu-Laurent Guy Louis (75% Grenache and 25% Syrah aged in 1-year-old French oak) exhibits a deep, semi-opaque purple color to go with deep, layered aromas of ripe blackberry and currant styled fruits, creamy licorice, Provencal herbs, and hints of spring flowers on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, pure texture, gorgeous purity of fruit, and a focused texture, this knockout wine will benefit from another 1-2 years of bottle age, and shine for just under a decade. There is a slightly modern slant here, but this is impressive...91" RR 10/12

The wine that blew me away was the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau. I think this will probably end up being called "Cuvee Speciale," which is what Tardieu has done in the past. This 100% Grenache cuvee tips the scales at 16% natural alcohol. Blueber... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Michel Tardieu's 2009 red Northern Rhone offerings still have a long wait in barrel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. They all reveal deep colors as well as abundant concentration, structure and power. I thought the best cuvees were the Co... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. The 2009 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes shows more powerful, masculinity, earthiness in a more rustic, rough-and-tumble style that will take several years to calm down in bottle, but it has loads of earth and chocolate to it. The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes comes primarily from two sectors of Chateauneuf du Pape, La Crau and Mont Olivet. It is a dense ruby/purple color, with plenty of garrigue, lavender, black currant, black cherry, sandy, loamy soil notes al... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Opaque violet. Very sexy, perfumed aromas of ripe black raspberry, olive and flowers; theres a wild, almost gamey quality to this wines perfume thats pretty interesting. Fresh and juicy in the mouth, with distinct sweetness to the dark berry, cher... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Syrah wine from Rhone in France. 2009 Tardieu-Laurent Cote Rotie 750ml
