This is gorgeous, with wood spice and tobacco notes leading the way for a massive core of black Mission fig and warm currant preserve flavors. This has the opulent fruit of the vintage, but maintains an edgy minerality as well. The long finish ripples with lavender and black tea. Grenache. Best from 2010 through 2023.

The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes Cuvee Speciale is composed primarily of Grenache with a touch of Cinsault. While the two previous Chateauneufs were made from destemmed fruit, this offering includes 100% stems. All from the famed La Crau parcel, it was made from 80-year old vines, and boasts 15% alcohol. Loads of pepper, garrigue, licorice, seaweed, and sweet currant, cherry, and plum-like fruit emerge from this full-bodied, fleshy, ripe, low acid Chateauneuf du Pape. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

A 100% Grenache cuvee from the sandy soils of a 106-year-old, biodynamically farmed La Crau vineyard, and aged in both foudre and tank, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Speciale is amazing. Abundant notes of melted licorice, kirsch liqueur, and flowers is followed by a full-bodied, seamlessly constructed wine with sensational purity, texture, depth, and length. The bad news is there are only 2,000 bottles. This 2007 should drink well for two decades or more.

The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Speciale boasts a dark ruby/plum color and a big, sweet nose of garrigue, new oak, blackberries, and sweet cherries. The wine is full-bodied, ripe, moderately tannic as well as powerful, and rich. It is another wine that will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and last for 15 or more years.

Stunning, with a terrific range of fig sauce, blackberry confiture, blueberry and linzer torte flavors layered with spice, mesquite, fruit cake and sweet earth notes. The long finish is riveted by minerality. So lush and accessible that this may be burning the candle at both ends, but it does so beautifully. Drink now through 2023.

Glass-staining ruby. Extremely sexy aromas of dark berries and kirsch, with anise and candied flowers adding complexity. Powerful black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors coat the palate, picking up lavender pastille and apricot notes with air. Lush, creamy and seamless, with excellent finishing sweetness and thrust.
