Tardieu-Laurent Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Vieilles Vignes 2013

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Light and fresh top notes redolent of juicy pear, green apple and toast with hints of more tropical fruits. Gorgeous bright lemon, green apple and chunky mango notes in the mouth, this pops with acidity on entry and keeps up the zestiness through the finish, where touches of cream and butter mellow the finish, which is oaked and very much the calm after the storm. Lovely. 91 pts

This is packed with dark, alluring fig, blackberry and boysenberry paste flavors, inlaid with dried anise and well-roasted alder and cedar notes. Offers a lingering ganache edge on the finish. This has heft, but remains very silky in feel. Best from 2016 through 2026. 500 cases made.

Superb and with loads of potential, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, with the Grenache aged in older barrel and the Syrah in new barrels) is more deep and layered than the Cuvee Speciale. Offering up impressive notes of mineral, new leather and smoky black fruits, this full-bodied, layered and textured 2012 has superb mid-palate depth, fine tannin and an all-around concentrated, backwards feel. It will require 3–4 years of bottle age and keep for 15 years or more. Drink 2017–2027.

Oak aging remains a hallmark of the Tardieu-Laurent style, but it seems to fit with the 2010s from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Toasted coconut, vanilla and plum pudding notes work together to give almost the impression of dessert in a glass, despite the wine’s dry nature. It’s full bodied, richly textured and slightly warm on the finish yet surprisingly elegant. Drink now–2020.

Dark ruby. Musky cherry pit and dark berries on the pungent, floral- and herb-accented nose. Deep, chewy cassis and bitter cherry flavors become livelier with air, picking up vibrant mineral and and spice notes. The long, clinging finish is marked by harmonious tannins and a sexy floral pastille quality.

This is a bit of a brute now with roasted fig espresso mocha and ganache notes leading the way but there s a terrific core of blackberry plum and black currant fruit in reserve and a gorgeous graphite-filled finish that can easily wait for everything to assimilate fully. Captures the power and drive of the vintage wonderfully. Best from 2015 through 2030. 525 cases made. JM Wine Spectator.
