Tamarack blends grapes from an astonishing number of sites scattered across the length and breadth of the Columbia Valley, and yet makes wines that are distinctive, polished, generous, and focused. The 2008 Merlot includes 5% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc. Its structure is firmly Cab-like, its fruit broadly displayed across the midpalate, a mix of ripe strawberries and cherries dusted with sweet baking spices and cocoa. Itandrsquo;s a joyride from start to finish.

The 2008 Merlot contains 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend. The fruit was sourced from 7 vineyards in 5 AVAs with aging in 50% new, mostly American oak. Notes of cedar, spice box, incense, violets, cassis, and blackberry compose the bouquet of this smooth-textured, savory, ripe Merlot. It can be approached now but has the structure to evolve for another 1andndash;2 years.

Lean, lithe and nicely balanced to play smoky black tea notes around a gentle core of cherry and raspberry fruit. Drink now through 2015.

This is a very classic Merlot. If you are not a "Merlot drinker" - think again. Tamarack had a fantastic vintage in 2005, and 2006 is following suit. It comes on as a big earthy old world Merlot on the nose, with hints of black fruits and something almost green - think forest. On the palate, it displays rich dark cherry notes, with a hint of creamy espresso, and maybe even . . . gingerbread? Regardless, it's D-lish. I love the nod it lends to both old and new worlds, without falling over in either direction.
