Talty Winery Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley Dwight Family 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lightly peppery and a little floral on the nose with very fresh red fruit that has an almost herbal, minty aspect. Bright acids on entry support fabulous red cherry and raspberry fruit. This is so zesty with lovely concentration of fruit supported by soft ripe tannins. It's long, clear and edgy in the mouth with superb clarity to the fruit and nuanced tobacco and chocolate notes adding detail and complexity. There’s a gentle streak of oak that becomes apparent on the long finish though it’s just a fine accent note. 93pts

The Talty story starts years ago with my father, William Talty. He was the first to introduce me to "Zinfandel Country", and it was with him that I learned and practiced the fine art of winemaking. It had always been our dream to own a winery; unfortunately, we were unable to bring that dream to fruition prior to his unexpected death in 1993. My family and I bought our vineyard in 1997 and named it in his honor. The Estate wine of the Talty Winery comes from dry-farmed grapes grown on our own six-acre vineyard in Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley. For over one hundred years, the Dry Creek Valley has been home to thousands of acres of cultivated land, five hundred of which are solely Zinfandel grapes. Although Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot grapes can be seen trellised all over the valley, the abundance and quality of the valley's Zinfandel grapes has led most to consider the Dry Creek Valley, "Zinfandel Country". As was my father's way, each Talty Zinfandel is truely handcrafted, from vine to wine. Our dry-farmed and head-pruned vines purposely produce a very small crop — approximately two tons per acre. This ensures the intensity and concentration of the fruit from the very start. Once picked, our grapes are fermented by their own natural yeast in small, open-top bins. They are punched down five times per day for the best flavor and color extraction. Our wines are available through our mailing list, at the winery, or at a handful of selected local fine wine retailers. Read less

Balsamic and intense on the nose with a hint of ash accenting the cherry and briary wood aromas. Intense, round, and opulent on the palate, this displays lovely fine-grained ripe tannins that add a bit of volume in the mouth There’s an early touch of inky fruit, followed by a rich core of slightly medicinal, minty black cherry fruit that exhibits lovely purity and finesse. The finish is long and ripe, with layers of blue and black fruit and well-judged wood spice on the long finish. 93 points

This is really high toned and attractive on the nose, with stemmy herb and floral notes over red berry and currant fruit. There’s also a sharp cedar note and some smoky char adding detail. Lean and focused on the palate with lots of early briary and oily herb notes. The tannins are fine and ripe and support clean, bracing red fruit along with the bright but integrated acidity. This really exhibits wonderful purity of fruit with a lovely sweetness and freshness, finishing with a minty tone and echoes of wood spice. 92pts

Fairly darkly fruited on the nose with a decidedly floral tone along with hints of juniper, black pepper and gingerbread. Bright and clean on the palate, with the wonderful clarity that seems to be the Talty trademark. This is all wild raspberry fruit with some creamy white chocolate notes up front that turn into red cherry flavors on the finish. This is so pure and long, it just lacks a bit of complexity. What it does offer is beautiful. 93pts
