Talbott Logan Chardonnay 2003

This is a best barrel selection from Sleepy Hollow Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Only 430 cases were produced. It’s a tremendous Chardonnay, just huge in the white Burgundy mode: ripe tropical fruit, new oak, lees, unfined and unfiltered. Right now, it’s a little gangly, like an adolescent who’s growing too fast. But we know this wine knits together as it ages. Best 2007–2011.

Wonderful complexity and depth. Offers a mix of youthful pear, apple, melon and citrus, with some mature tropical fruit notes that pick up a wonderful graham cracker and cinnamon spiciness that’s enticing. Drink now through 2009.

More leesy, deeper-pitched aromas of apricot, smoke and hazelnut. Richer and fuller than the regular chardonnay, with a chewier texture and a truffley note. Still youthfully hard-edged but firm and long.
