Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 97 Jg 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

"Taittinger’s 2002 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne is off the charts. I have tasted the 2002 now many times, and it has never been less than thrilling. A vivid kaleidoscope of pure Chardonnay aromas and flavors opens up in the glass. The 2002 is at once incredibly rich yet also totally weightless and impeccable in its balance. All the classic Comtes notes are there, but with a level of detail and nuance I don’t think I have ever seen before. The 2002 is breathtakingly beautiful today, but also appears to have the stuffing to age for decades...98" WA 11/12 "The deep and stunning nose soars from the glass in a pure and toasty mélange of delicious apples, pears, brioche, just a hint of wood char, a gloriously complex base of chalky soil tones, orange zest, incipient notes of pastry cream, a dollop of lemon blossoms and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and supremely elegant, with a great core of fruit, utterly refined mousse, crisp acids, superb balance and delineation and great length and grip on the seamless and absolutely dancing finish. Given the ripeness of the 2002 vintage, the stunning refinement and elegance of this Comtes de Champagne is absolutely magical! A great, great wine...97+" JG 8/12

The firm is distinguished for its extensive vineyard holdings of 752 acres, including prestigious Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims regions. Unlike most large houses, Champagne Taittinger relies primarily on estate grapes for its portfolio of Champagnes. Also unique are the higher proportion of Chardonnay in its wines that gives Taittinger its signature style, and the time devoted to aging the wines before release—most often greatly exceeding the legal requirement, in a practice that also has become a Taittinger hallmark. Distinguished for its extensive vineyard holdings of 752 acres, including prestigious Grand Cru vineyards. Highest-quality production: exceeding minimum aging for all cuvées, high percentage of estate grapes, sustainable practices. Uses a higher proportion of Chardonnay grapes in its blends than other large houses—Taittinger’s unique personality. Critical acclaim: consistently outstanding (90+) scores, worldwide recognition among connoisseurs Read less
