Taittinger Blanc de Blancs 1998

External Review:

($140) Green-gold. Vibrant, youthful, precise aromas of green apple, Meyer lemon and dusty citrus zest. Racy and taut on the palate, with a strong mousse and impressive focus and concentration to the tangy apple and citrus flavors. Juicy, palate-stai... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Champagne Blend wine from Champagne in France. 1996 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, Blanc de Blancs 750ml

Champagne Taittinger is one of the few remaining family owned and operated Champagne houses. The firm is distinguished for its extensive vineyard holdings of 752 acres, including prestigious Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims regions. Unlike most large houses, Champagne Taittinger relies primarily on estate grapes for its portfolio of Champagnes. Also unique are the higher proportion of Chardonnay in its wines that gives Taittinger its signature style, and the time devoted to aging the wines before release—most often greatly exceeding the legal requirement, in a practice that also has become a Taittinger hallmark. Distinguished for its extensive vineyard holdings of 752 acres, including prestigious Grand Cru vineyards. Highest-quality production: exceeding minimum aging for all cuvées, high percentage of estate grapes, sustainable practices. Uses a higher proportion of Chardonnay grapes in its blends than other large houses—Taittinger’s unique personality. Critical acclaim: consistently outstanding (90+) scores, worldwide recognition among connoisseurs Read less

Had a few glasses of this at one of my favorite chef's restaurant recently. It has fine bubbles and tastes wonderful. Very elegant. This champagne is made only from the chardonnay grape. Generally, champagne is made from three grapes: two black grapes (pinot noir, pinot meunier) and chardonnay, the white grape. The red grapes give it its weight and maturing roundness.

why is this listed as a red? wierd... but it's as delicious as it comes. piney, clean, lemon and nuts, with nicely underpinned acid.

Toast and graphite flavors highlight this elegant, graceful blanc de blancs. It has a subtle power driving the candied berry and dried citrus notes, with a touch of pastry and the ever-present mineral. Fine harmony and finish. Drink now through 2015.... Wine Spectator. Pale color. Knockout aromas of lime blossom, orange peel, minerals and cilantro. Almost painfully intense on entry, then rich and superconcentrated. Vibrant flavors of orange pith, lime and mint offer great thrust without any heaviness. Extraordinari... Stephen Tanzer's IWC.
