Tablas Creek Red Rhone Blend Paso Robles Esprit de Beaucastel 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Berry Bros & Rudd review: This joint venture between Californian winery proprietor Robert Haas and the Perrin family of the great Chateau de Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape took a few years to find its feet but recent vintages have been outstanding. The vines' location has been very well chosen in Paso Robles to yield high quality Mediterranean-style wines from southerh Rhone varietals. This vintage is made up of 45% Mourvedre, 28% Grenache, 22% Syrah and 5% Counoise. The aroma boasts black cherry, blueberry and licorice, with hints of dark chocolate, while the palate is rich, generous and warming with bags of dense black fruit, supported by excellent acidity and a fine edge of minerality.

(Alun Griffiths MW, BBR Buyer)

Awesome rhone blend from Paso. Black cherries and blackberries jump out first followed by red cherries. Great balance, long finish, just a fantastic wine.

California Mourvedre berries from French clones dried on straw to concentrate flavors, and oh how they did. Aromatic nose of smoke, lychee, bay leaves with hint of mint, barnyard, and dark chocolate. On the attack noticeable acid and heat and fruit give way to weightly and slick and sweet flavors of rich ripe cherry-berry, chocolate, and sweet vineyard earth. Well-integrated and balanced but beware the wine favors the sweet, clearly a dessert wine. Expensive but about worth the price and probably ok to drink now but might be better in a year.

Elegant mouthfeel. Vivid wild berries and interesting hints of nutmeg, cedae and coconut. Long finish. Some nuances in this wine I have not experienced together before. Very interesting and complex, ever changing on the palate.

Another excellent, excellent vintage. Mint, blackberry, and plum aromas. Crisp, clear fruit on the midpalate with lots of cherries and chocolate. Much lighter on its feet than the 05, this should age spectacularly.

Like it's big brother in France, this is a wonderful depiction of Southern Rhone. Consistently a great effort, vintage to vintage.

I'm a huge fan of Mourvèdre so I really loved this wine. Deep ruby in color. Full bodied and intense, yet elegantly complex. Aromas of dark berries, cedar, nutmeg and coconut. I believe Wine Spectator gave it 93 points

Good medium-deep red. Currant, mineral and animal aromas, along with a whiff of Band-Aid that dissipated with aeration. Firm, minerally and structured, with notes of currant, tree bark and black licorice. Saline, focused and gripping wine with strong acidity and firm tannic spice. I never would have picked this for a wine from California.

Deep red with a bright rim. Spicy red berries, potpourri and minerals on the nose; this smells awfully fresh. Bright, palate-staining raspberry and blackcurrant flavors possess excellent concentration and are leavened by zesty minerality. Finishes smooth and silky, with echoing raspberry and floral qualities. This is complex enough to enjoy right now.

A musky, animal-scented wine, which may put some sniffers off. If you can get past that, it is superb. Brilliantly fruity, with a mélange of berry and spice flavors, rich tannins, and the good acidity that comes from West Side Paso grapes.

Well-balanced, intense yet elegant. Full-bodied, showing vivid blueberry and wild berry flavors, with hints of nutmeg, cedar and coconut. Ends with a long, complex finish that shows a pleasant loamy, earthy quality. Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. Drink now through 2014.

The brilliant 2006 Esprit de Beaucastel (45% Mouvèdre, 28% Grenache, 22% Syrah, and the rest Counoise) possesses abundant aromas of underbrush, blueberries, blackberries, coffee beans, and licorice. An elegant, long, pure, medium to full-bodied effort, it is a faithful representation of its Mediterranean blend. Consume it over he next decade.

Good intensity and vibrancy of flavors, with grapey blackberry and black cherry fruit that turns dry. Mourvèdre, Syrah, Grenache and Cournoise. Drink now through 2006.
