Tablas Creek Red Rhone Blend Paso Robles Esprit de Beaucastel 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

2004 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastle Paso Robles "The outstanding clone of the famed Chteauneufdu Pape Beaucastel, the 2004 Esprit de Beaucastel is a combination of 50%Mourvdre, 27% Syrah, 17% Grenache, and 6% Counoise. There are 3,500 cases of this beauty, which exhibits peppery, earthy, gamy, meaty characteristics intermixed with black cherry, cassis, and new saddle leather. Dense, rich, spicy, and exuberant, impressively made as well as well-balanced, it can be drunk over the next decade." 92ptsRPThe 2004 Esprit de Beaucastel is dark black-red in color, with a rich briary nose of dark red fruit (plum and currant), sweet spices (nutmeg, clove) and mocha. The elegant, layered palate shows spicy plum and cherry fruit, smoky, meaty flavors, and ripe tannins. The long finish reveals mineral and black cherry. The wine is showing remarkably well now, but should evolve elegantly in bottle for 10-15 years or longer. This is a California Wine.

Fantastic! Elegant and complex. Pairs well with a variety of foods. Will cellar for at least 10 years, but is extremely drinkable now.

NOSE: Cherry, quite earthy. There was a reticent tone of delicious fruit - similar to what I have referred to as "cherry" in the past. Perhaps this was the Syrah. Somewhat tight nose. PALATE: Velvety feel. Quite sweet. Low acidity in the midpalate, but the acidity shows through in the finish. Good, strong, rich tannins on the finish. Somewhat woody aftertaste.
