T Vine Zinfandel Napa 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very dark color still youthful. Eucalyptus and jammy fruit soar from the glass but underneath there is great depth of dark minerality, burnt aromatic woods, rich soil tones and a note of violet candy. The entry is opulant and spicy with good acidity and soft tannins framing leathery dark plummy fruit but the midpalate is a bit hollow and the finish dies abruptly. The nose on this blend of 65% zin/35%mataro promises much more than the palate can delivery. this was fantastic a few years ago but is now firmly in decline.

T-Vine Cellars:
We are a very small winery located off the beaten path in Calistoga, behind the owner - winemaker's home. There are just 3 people that work at T-Vine. We market, sell and deliver all of our own wine in California.

Nose opens like a menthol mist, suggesting a medicinal substance, with whiffs of ocean spray following, enriched by scents of raisins, prunes, and rose stem, with cauliflower joining sour earthy tones to give bass notes to the combination. Tart and tangy acidity adds zest. Palate opens sour but mellows with time. Caramel, brown sugar, cherry, raisin and prune flavors take the place of tart fruit and menthol as the wine evolves over the first hour. Acidity becomes stronger after one hour, and bitterness eventually overtakes other influences, leaving strong citrus, especially grapefruit, as the dominant surviving taste. This wine struggles valiantly to organize, and has moments of clarity, but falls into disarray over time. Don't save for second day.

Bigger, darker and sweeeter than most of Greg's wines. A hot year!

Rating: 89/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. Mixing blackberry fruit tones with light sniffs of old leather and the tightness of youth, this wine still gets it spot on in its aromas and delivers well in the mouth. It is supple to start in palatefeel, then progress to a firm, tannin-supported spine that demands a fair bit of patience in order for the wine to come out of its rough stance. With depth to spare and focus that is true-to-type, this Zin can be put away with confidence.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.
