Syrah Sierra Foothills 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

The grapes used for this wine came from two vineyards. The hillside vineyard owned by Oakmont Vineyards in the Shenandoah Valley California AVA, and Jim Brown's vineyard in Fair Play. We harvested when the fruit was completely ripe. The grapes were hand sorted and gently crushed. The fermentation was delayed for two days by keeping the must cold under 60 degrees F. We used our Submerged Cap Fermentation Tank that keeps the berries submerged throughout the fermentation for better flavor extraction and softer tannins.This wine exemplifies the style of wine that I like to create. It has a deep color and a classic Syrah aroma of green & black peppercorn combined with a woodsy and pine character. This Syrah has the fruit, the spice and the savory flavors found in great Syrahs. After the initial subtle fruit flavors, the true character of this Syrah is revealed with smoky and meaty nuances and a mocha and spicy finish.

This Syrah reminds me of an Old World Wine. It has a deep color with dark berry aromas combined with spice and mint. It has very concentrated flavors of dark berries which carry to the palate adding layers of cherry, smoke and even leather. This well balanced wine has an abundance of savory type flavors. The wine finishes with a long and lingering finish adding herbal and spicy flavors combined with smoky notes reminiscent of bacon. This is a big wine worthy of aging for several years for optimum quality.

Wine Tasting NotesThe wine has a deep color with intense varietal herbal aromas of rosemary, sage and peppercorn. The flavor begins with dark berry fruit, reminiscent of blackberry jam and continues with a lingering finish of peppercorn, a hint of oak and soft tannins. As the wine stands, the aromas become more fruity, like dark cassis - and meaty, the charred-roast type.
