Switchback Ridge Merlot Napa Valley Peterson Family Vineyard 2005

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

At first offers up a very precise and clean nose but turns just a touch hot as the intense, spicy red fruits begin to assert themselves. Soft in the mouth with very fine wild berry/currant fruit up front then a mid-palate which is just a bit woody and bitter but powerful and full of chewy, dense fruit. Finishes with good length but not much complexity to the bittersweet cocoa notes that dominate the end.

Some espresso on the nose. Sour nose and a tad plummy, with sou cherry. It's a full bodied, succulent, fleshy merlot. Rich and dense. Super rich on the palate like some of the best California merlots are. Very nice. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 6/19/10

Luscious red berry nose laced with some mint and eucalyptus nuances. Some wet stone as well. It has some strong acid that comes on a bit astringent. Flavors of black cherry, chocolate fudge and espresso. Good fruit, but has some tartness. 1/21/12

This Merlot could easily be mistaken for a great cab. It is rich with notes of chocolate and smooth tannins. had some with good friends tonight for Memorial Day and went great with our grilled burgers.

The 2005 Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard will easily convince skeptics that good Merlot can be voluptuous and sexy. Its dense purple color is followed by notes of black cherry jam interwoven with chocolate fudge, espresso, and toasty oak. Succulent and fleshy, it is all that a California Merlot should be. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

It is hard to find a better California Merlot than this 2001 Peterson Family Vineyard. A saturated purple color accompanies a gorgeous perfume of espresso roast, Valhrona chocolates, black currants, and a hint of toasty oak. Rich, opulent, and full-bodied, this spectacular Merlot should drink well for 10-15 years.

Another beautiful effort is the deep purple-colored 2002 Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard. A big, sweet, chocolate, toffee, caramel, and dried herb-scented bouquet is followed by a round, generous Merlot exhibiting silky tannin as well as a sweet, rich finish. It can be enjoyed over the next 5-8 years.

Offers fragrant plum and cassis aromas, with rich, ripe and supple flavors that show accents of white pepper, Asian spice and toasty oak. Builds depth and intensity on the finish. Drink now through 2012. 1,340 cases made. Wine Spectator. A Merlot wine from California in USA. 2005 Switchback Ridge Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard 1500ml

A bold, rich, mouthcoating style, with ripe currant, blackberry and mocha-vanilla scents and a long, intense aftertaste that keeps pumping out the flavors. Best from 2004 through 2012.
