Swanson Merlot Oakville 2004
To know Swanson is to know merlot; conversely, to know merlot is to know Swanson. The heart and soul of our storied Oakville Cross Road vineyard, our merlot is as casual as you want it to be and as complex and delicately layered as most Oakville cabernets. As Napa Valley’s largest producer of estate-grown merlot, Swanson has built its reputation on this superb wine. Merlot is who we are and what we do, and every tasty vintage for the past 20 years has proved our devotion to it.
We have only found this by the half-bottle locally but we love it. Doesn't have an overly-strong alcohol taste and has a nice smooth oak/berry flavor. Highly recommend this wine!
Spicy, complex nose with plum, cherry, blueberry, prune, melon, vanilla, purple sage, tumbleweed, leather, tobacco, coffee grounds, pepper, dish soap, and wafts of floral and earth. Some heat and bitterness in the taste at launch, with lacings of licorice, cigar box, tobacco, and earth. Red fruits, including raspberry and cherry, follow, adding to the evolving medley of spice, herbs and fruit that give the wine complexity over time. Good fruit, with hints of blueberry and mocha emerge during the velvety finish. Acidity not balanced, but spice is nice.
2004 vintage is one of the 5 best merlots I've experienced. A definite for any merlot lover.
