What to Expect

Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.

Winemakers Notes

To know Swanson is to know merlot; conversely, to know merlot is to know Swanson. The heart and soul of our storied Oakville Cross Road vineyard, our merlot is as casual as you want it to be and as complex and delicately layered as most Oakville cabernets. As Napa Valley’s largest producer of estate-grown merlot, Swanson has built its reputation on this superb wine. Merlot is who we are and what we do, and every tasty vintage for the past 20 years has proved our devotion to it.

2004 vintage is one of the 5 best merlots I've experienced. A definite for any merlot lover.

To catch merlot at the peak of ripeness is rare [but] Swanson managed to do that in 2004... The result is a wine with pure black currant flavor (something more associated with Cabernet Sauvignon). ...The structure feels spherical and the flavor fills every receptor with a luscious, gracious balance of fresh fruit and cool, earthy tannin. Mellow and beautifully toned... 94" Wine & Spirits (06/07)

This wine is an intense expression of Merlot. Black cherry, blackberry, smoke and espresso are prominent on the nose and palate. Powerful, satiny tannins provide the stunning texture for which Swanson Merlot is known. Warmly inviting upon release,

2004 Swanson Merlot is a powerful, concentrated expression of the variety. The nose shows black cherry, smoke, blackberry, and espresso. The flavors in the mouth echo the aromatic expression nicely. The fine-grained tannins for which Swanson Merlots have become known provide the round, ripe texture of this wine. While drinking surprisingly well today, this wine will improve and be enjoyable for at least the next 6-8 years.
