The history of Sutter Home Winery dates back to the late 1800's, when a Swiss-German immigrant named John Thomann established a small winery and distillery in the heart of California's Napa Valley. Although much has changed for the Trincheros and Sutter Home, the motto and philosophy originated by their father more than a half-century ago remains the same: "A great product for a fair price." After resurrecting Sutter Home in 1948, the Trincheros struggled to keep the family winery afloat, imbuing it with the values of hard work, ingenuity, humility and integrity that have characterized them ever since. Each member of the family played a vital role in keeping the business running: Mother Mary Trinchero kept the books, younger children Vera and Roger helped on the bottling line, while older brother Bob assisted his dad, Mario, and uncle John in cleaning out tanks and barrels. The family's cohesion kept Sutter Home together and eventually made it the success it is today. With its creation of White Zinfandel in the early 1970s and the introduction of high-quality, affordably priced varietal wines during the 1980s and '90s, Sutter Home became a household name and the second largest, independent family-run winery in the U.S. Read less

Big black currant and black plum fruit greet the nose over black olive, bay leaf, roast beef, tobacco and mint nuances. This is dry, linear and compact on entry with a lovely brambly black currant perfume. There's plenty of tannins here but they're not too dry and they are well covered by the earthy, slightly leather black fruits on the palate. Bordering on austere, this delivers a really compelling blend of savory olive and tobacco flavors along with the ripe and almost, but not quite, sweet black fruit. The finish is dominated by that same black fruit with oak spice lurking under the fruit. Not as long as one might hope but still lovely with a wild cherry streak running through it that pops on the finale. 92pts

This was my first 2008 vintage. I am not familiar with this variety, and this particular wine I felt really needs some getting used to. Not sure if it was intentional, but the bouget was very fragrant with a slight hint of mildew. The color wasfantastic purply inky, unlike the more reddish of the red wine cadre. The taste was strongly boysenberry (as it says on the label) but reminds me of a fenced fallow pasture. Don't know why. Didn't pair well with a roasted chicken and root vegetable dish at all. In fact, I ended up throwing my glass out and opening something else. That doesn't happen often in my house. I am a pretty solid put er up er with offness. Maybe I'll try this variety again by another winery to get a feel for this variety, but its not on my list of favs so far.

Had this at a wine tasting and it was presented to me compared to a Beaujolais Nouveau from California. I was skeptical to begin with. Very strong tastes of cherry and jam in an overall young wine without the fun of being a Nouveau. Almost too sweet. I would definitely spend the money on an actual Beaujolais if that is the flavor your are after.

Tried this with great expectations after reading the reviews. Was not disappointed. Very well balanced cab. Tannins strong enough to hold the dark fruit, smoke, and spice together, yet not overpowering the palate. At 16 bucks, still a bargain. Had the '07, thought it was cellar worthy. This might be real dynamite with a few more years in the bottle.

There's pleasure in this polished, soft wine. It's dry and rich in tannins, with good blackberry, cassis and black cherry flavors that are deep and long. The softness gives it a supple, creamy-smooth mouth-feel.

J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon is intensely-colored with youthful and bright hues. An abundance of dark cherry, black currant and berry fruit greets the nose, enhanced by spicy cedar, vanilla and toasty notes. On the palate, the fruit follows through with full weight and a lingering intensity and balance from the tannins. This wine is ready to be enjoyed now, or cellared for 5 years.

Here's a fine everyday Cabernet for drinking now with your favorite meat dish or cheese. It's soft and rich in berry, currant and spice flavors. Could be a little drier, but it sure is tasty.

A bouyant red-purple color with bright hues. Generous aromas of black cherry, black currant and plum fruit, complemented by vanilla, tar and toasty notes from the twelve to fourteen months in barrel. On the palate, the fruit flavors echo the aroma, complexed with blackberry and a plump, softly texture mouthfeel and finish. - Jeff Meier, winemaker

One of the workhorses on the J. Lohr "farm," the Seven Oaks Cabernet is hugely successful in restaurants because of its accessible pricing and style. Its soft tannins, ripe fruit and slightly herbal edge go perfectly with grilled beef and lamb.

Blackberry, plum and espresso flavors are tangy, with a hint of floral sweetness, with firm tannins and cedary oak lingering on an earthy finish. Drink now through 2008.
