Susana Balbo Torrontés Crios 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Super fragrant, smelling of a spring flower garden, honey, and exotic spices, from the nose one expects the wine to be sweet. On the palate, however, it is dry with a creamy texture, intense flavors, excellent acidity, and a lengthy finish. It is an ideal alternative for rich courses normally calling for Chardonnay. - Winemaker's Notes

Apricot and peach notes, minerally, dry but slightly fruity - very refreshing

Bargain wine that is fun to learn about. Nose will make you think of a sweet muscat or viognier, body has some viognier meets sauvignon blanc action.

Elegant and well structured - Clear, pale green yellow in color. Soft fruity aromas dance seamlessly with floral ribbons of orange blossom and honeysuckle, and just a hint of lanolin. Ripe flavors of citrus fruit and pear, with a nice moderate acidity on the palate. Dry, moderate and balanced alcohol. A nice Spring wine that should be enjoyed in its youth. Would pair well with lightly grilled vegetables and some seafood, but it doesn't beg for accompaniment.

I loved this Torrontes. The '08 Crios de Susana Balbo was the first torrontes I've tried, and it really reminds me of the Viognier that I had earlier this year. I love the acid in its initial attack. The nose was very floral and very sauvignon blanc like. I first tried it chilled, and would have given it 3 1/2 glasses (here on snoot.com), but having it again at room temp really brought out the nose AND made my pallet appreciate the citrus flavor all the more - scoring a final 4 glasses. I'd pick this up again!

This brilliant portfolio begins with the medium straw-colored 2008 Torrontes. It offers up an alluring perfume of spring flowers, peach, apricot, and a hint of citrus. On the palate the wine is dry, smooth textured, layered, and succulent while retaining a sense of elegance. This nicely balanced wine features a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.

Pale color. Pungent aromas of citrus peel, ginger, mint and floral oils. Juicy, spicy and firm, with a lively lightness and good subtle persistence. Finishes vibrant and firm-edged, almost austere but not at all bitter. An excellent example of this variety, and a perfect aperitif. This tastes even drier than its five grams of r.s. would suggest.

The 2007 Torrontes is about as good as this varietal gets. Drink it over the next 12-18 months.

Crisp and refreshing, with notes of citrus, spice, and bright fruit. We even noticed a bit of mint creeping in. The body is perfect, not too heavy but not too thin. An exciting wine and an exceptional value.

This zesty white features notes of fennel-accented clementine and peach, as hints of white flower fill the finish. Drink now.

Perfumed aromas of peach nectar and flowers. Juicy, pure and intense, with lovely floral perfume and bright framing acidity. A bit viogner-like in its floral complexity. Finishes juicy and long, and not a bit heavy. This is the #1 torrontes imported from Argentina and virtually never misses.
