Begins with malbec’s usual magic-marker ink and an underlying hint of musk, but the flavor itself is quite a contrast – light and tart, with not much structure yet enough fruit to satisfy. (AV 85, http://argovino.com/?p=409)

Overrated indeed! This wine is boring on the palate. You don't feel it on the midpalate. It is bitter. On the nose you get good things though, spics, black fruits, blackberry. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because of the sniff and the color. It is purple like good Malbec, but that doesn't live up to the way it tastes!

Malbec has been used in French wines for years, usually as part of a blend. More recently, it has gained recognition in Argentina and Chile, as winemakers there bottle it as a single varietal. Susana Balbo strives to create full-bodied wines that are balanced, complex, and simply delicious. This Malbec hits the mark. It's a dark, rich wine with blueberry, anise and mocha flavors and a finish that's luscious and smooth.

Ripe, almost jammy, with creamy, soft layers of blueberry and boysenberry fruit followed by sweet toast and spice notes on the easy finish. Drink now.

With a tasty mix of red and blackberry fruit, this medium-weight Malbec also offers chocolate and sweet spice notes. Nice, mouthfilling texture and a juicy finish. Drink now through 2004.

The dark ruby-colored, medium-bodied 2000 Malbec exhibits a great nose of black pepper-laced blackberries. Medium-bodied, it offers a beguiling panoply of red and black fruits as well as touches of mint. Its character, like Balbo's other wines in this report, would be more attractive if it were fleshed out and had a more supple finish. Projected maturity: 2005-2010.

On the chunky side, with grilled beef, brier and chocolate notes, and a firm, muscular finish that picks up a nice mineral note. Very solid, just lacks a bit of finesse. Contains 5 percent each of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2004.

Bright ruby-red. Slightly reduced aromas of black- and blueberry, licorice pastille, violet, menthol and bitter chocolate. Suave on entry, then firm and tightly wound in the midpalate, with a medicinal, almost inky character calling for patience. Tactile and fresh but not yet complex and in need of patience. Will this loosen up in the bottle? Finishes with sweet tannins and lingering fruit.

Good dark ruby-red. Musky aromas of dark berries, mocha and coffee. Broader and fatter than the cabernet but less sweet and less vibrant. In a more earthbound, chunky style. This is still a bit youthfully tight but I'd be more optimistic about this wine's future if it showed more high notes today. finishes with toothdusting tannins. The 2005 was similarly quite closed at an early stage.
