Surh Luchtel Zinfandel Napa Valley 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Recommendation: Surh Luchtel 2004 Zinfandel Tasting Notes: Typical of Napa zinfandel, it is earthy and well focused. Typical of most of our reds wines, it is ripe, dense and concentrated. With about an hour of aeration, its ripe blackberry, raspberry liqueur and dark chocolate flavors will emerge through and take center stage. While it will be very interesting to see how it matures in 5-7 years, we suspect not much will be cellared as it is so delicious now. Please specify whether you would like cork or screwcap finish when ordering. Winemaking Notes: As usual, from very low yields of less than 2 tons per acre, this old vine zinfandel was hand picked, sorted meticulously, cold soaked for 3 days before being fermented for 11 days with the maximum temperature of 86 degrees. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wine was racked 4 times before being bottled in May of 2006. Vineyard Notes: We have been making wine together since 1992 with grapes obtained from various vineyards of Napa, Sonoma, Monterey and Mendocino counties. Over the years we have made Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Sangiovese and Chardonnay. The 1999 vintage was our first commercial year in which we made 1100 total cases of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bordeaux blend called Mosaique, and a Napa Valley Zinfandel. Currently we make approximately 2000 cases a year. Technical Notes: Appellation: Napa Valley Bottled: May, 2006 Alcohol: 15.9% Aging: 19 months in 30% new, 70% 1-2 yr. old French oak Case Production: 375 Cases Return to Surh Luchtel wine list

Our goal is to make balanced and yet concentrated wines that display the fruit and the character of the vintage and region. From our full-bodied intense Cabernet Sauvignon to our softer Bordeaux blend Mosaique, our wines are meant to be a part of food, to be enjoyed with your loved ones frequently. Our production is extremely limited, usually each batch consisting of no more than a few hundred cases. Our wines are truly handcrafted and we hope that our passion shows through in our wines. Surh Luchtel wines are the result of collaboration between two long time friends Don Surh and Gary Luchtel. First as housemates in college in the Oakland hills in the late 70’s, we became friends over many a bottle and discovered that our wine interests were more than casual. Read less
