Summers Merlot Reserve Summers Ranch 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Fairly floral on the nose with lots of perfumed oak aromas framing a core of bright, spicy blackberry and lingonberry fruit. This really flows across the palate with an excellent blend of richness of fruit and firmness of structure. The acids are a touch low, lending this additional weight in the mouth but the tannins, copious as they may be, are rather soft and polished. layers of cocoa, dried herb, slightly dried blackberry and mulberry fruit and finely integrated wood spice emerge on the palate with a lovely streak of black cherry leading to a finely focused, spice and tobacco scented finish. Perhaps a bit too oaky, the texture of this wine is excellent. powerful yet lean with excellent persistence to the black fruits on the finish. 91pts

The first production of Summers Ranch Merlot was the 1992 vintage, and we increased the yield to reach a maximum of 2000 cases. In 1996 we expanded our vineyard holdings to include 25 acres at the corner of Highway 128 and Tubbs Lane. This Napa Valley property carries the name Summers Estate Wines, with the vineyard designation of Villa Andriana Vineyard, named after our daughter. The property has been completely transformed to recognize its full potential. With a winery/tasting room, entertainment center, bocce ball court, picnic area and 22+ acres of vines (Zinfandel, Charbono, and Cabernet Sauvignon) we think it a perfect balance of pleasure and productivity. Creating red-wine from grapes grown on small acreages in both Napa Valley and Knights Valley is the passion of Beth and Jim Summers. The signature, "unique" wine offered by Summers is Charbono. The name is thought to be an early Italian immigrant version of Charbonneau, a French varietal. Some strongly believe that this variety is a close relative to the Dolcetto variety, widely grown in northern Italy. The vine bears very large berries that are used to make a very dark red wine that, when subjected to extended skin contact during fermentation, is full of fruit flavor and low in tannins. Read less

This is fairly tight on the nose showing focused vanilla, cured tobacco and floral topped cherry fruit. This is a rather structured Merlot, nicely firm int he mouth with early candied berry fruit flavors that are quickly wrapped up in well used oak and some stiff mineral tones. There's real depth of fruit on the palate with a nice spicy overlay of oak that sinks below the vanilla shaded yet fresh cherry and plum fruit on the finish. This shows a touch of heat on the long, clear finish but really manages to express tons of rich, ripe California fruit without being heavy or overwrought. 91pts

Tannic and bitter with a short finish. Dark red fruited.

Sourced from Summers Ranch in Knights Valley, the 2009 Merlot is deep and heady and is jam packed with fruit, intensity, and character which is remarkable for the price point.
