Jim Summers purchased a 28-acre vineyard in Knights Valley in 1987. At that time it was mostly Merlot grapes with some Muscat Canelli. Jim Summers purchased a 28-acre vineyard in Knights Valley in 1987. At that time it was mostly Merlot grapes with some Muscat Canelli. The first production of Summers Ranch Merlot was the 1992 vintage, and we increased the yield to reach a maximum of 2000 cases. In 1996 we expanded our vineyard holdings to include 25 acres at the corner of Highway 128 and Tubbs Lane. This Napa Valley property carries the name Summers Estate Wines, with the vineyard designation of Villa Andriana Vineyard, named after our daughter. The property has been completely transformed to recognize its full potential. With a winery/tasting room, entertainment center, bocce ball court, picnic area and 22+ acres of vines (Zinfandel, Charbono, and Cabernet Sauvignon) we think it a perfect balance of pleasure and productivity. Creating red-wine from grapes grown on small acreages in both Napa Valley and Knights Valley is the passion of Beth and Jim Summers. The signature, "unique" wine offered by Summers is Charbono. The name is thought to be an early Italian immigrant version of Charbonneau, a French varietal. Some strongly believe that this variety is a close relative to the Dolcetto variety, widely grown in northern Italy. The vine bears very large berries that are used to make a very dark red wine that, when subjected to extended skin contact during fermentation, is full of fruit flavor and low in tannins. Read less

A nice minty, herbaceous edge greets the nose, adding freshness here to the slightly oaky and hard dark currant fruit. This smells unforgiving. Tight on entry, there's a good amount of fruit here, but this is not fleshy and plump but rather focused and crisp, medium weight with black cherry and currant fruit topped with a hint of mint and laid over a base of cedary oak. This seems to need some time in the bottle, not soft but neither oppressive for its a slightly fruit-driven classic Napa Valley Cabernet, though perhaps not representative of the typical warmth of Calistoga. The finish shows more of the oak, dry and nutty with lingering vanilla sweetness matched by the compressed cherry fruit and ending with a touch of smoke on the finale. Should benefit from 1-3 years in the cellar. 87pts

Delightfully dark earthy nose, with vegetative red pepper, complex vanilla notes, and cherries. The body is very smooth and easy to drink, with moderate tannins and bits of marshmallow toast on the finish.

Good cabernet, but can find ones of about the same quality for about half the price.

Just as Andriana Summers has grown up, so has Summers Villa Andriana Vineyard. With the maturity of both Andriana and the Villa Andriana Vineyard, comes our first ever Summers Calistoga Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes procured from several select vineyards in Calistoga, including the Summers own Villa Andriana Vineyard. A medium-bodied wine with fruity sweet, black cherry and black currant notes interwoven with notions of barbeque smoke, white chocolate and espresso. Were proud to bring you a wine that reflects the quality and care weve put into our own estate vineyards. - Winery ** SOLD OUT **
