This 08 Sucano introduces itself with a nice medium intensity ruby-cherry colour on the eye, which is a result of the 12-14 months spent in French oak barrique’s. Interestingly the barrel ageing is done in an old truscan tomb. So if you do visit the winery, make sure you ask to see the tomb and barrels! On the nose you get a whiff of red fruits of the forest as well as loads of spices from cloves to peppers sided with notes of licorice. However this is accompanied by an unfortunate strong burnt coffee scent, which overtakes the whole glass the more you swish. Red plums come through on the palate, which marry well with the subtle tannins, ending in a surprisingly short but licoricey finish. Paring suggestions would include a winter lamb or rabbit stew and if chilled it would accompany a nice barbequed fish.

    Goes together very well with Italian pasta dishes with savoury meat sauces, escargot, parma ham, smoked sausages or tartar, bistecca fiorentina, wild boar, lamb provençale, dove, pheasant, or a flavourful stuffed duck. The densely coloured, but also brilliant red wine has a subtle yet complex nose with hints of black cherries, coffee beans, cocoa powder, combined with spicy notes of pepper, laurel and sage. Its taste is harmonious, elegant and complex, with soft, rounded, silky tannin and a long finish. The slightly piquant and chocolaty taste, the scent of berries and figs, and the deliciously integrated sweetness of the fruits are reminiscent of great Bordeaux.
