Stuhlmuller Vineyards Estate Chardonnay Alexander Valley 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This shows tight, focused fruit on the nose with hints of freshly shelled nuts, a wash of vanilla, and soft, earthy citrus tones and floral accents. On the palate this is rather light and elegant with a round yet ethereal feel. It’s got lively acids that highlight the nutmeat and ripe citrus and pear fruit of the palate, which flows over to a steely stone fruit backend. The finish is really strict and focused, with excellent length and just a suggestion of wood spice. This is a sneaky little bugger. It’s a bit subtle but doesn’t lack for detail and surprises with each taste. It’s also wonderfully balanced and proportioned making this a dream to pair with food. 92pts

Since 1982, Stuhlmuller Vineyards has built a reputation as growers of world-class grapes, selling their coveted fruit to a number of top area wineries. By the mid-‘90s, Fritz Stuhlmuller was so inspired by the complex wines being made from his family’s vineyard that he established a small, artisan winery bearing the Stuhlmuller name. The vineyard’s unique terroir creates Chardonnay fruit with classic Alexander Valley tropical characteristics, food-friendly citrus acidity and a distinctive mineral touch. The Cabernet Sauvignon offers enticing hints of sage and bay leaf coupled with the region's signature flavors of rich cherry, black fruit and cocoa. In 2000 Stuhlmuller Vineyards built a new winery on the property, sized precisely to handle the small amounts of world-class, estate fruit the Stuhlmullers select to create their wines. Guided by gifted winemaker Leo Hansen (and consulting winemaker Kerry Damskey), Stuhlmuller Vineyards handcrafts, small-lot wines that embody a rich, expressive charm, and a distinctive sense of place. A lovely nose with nuanced honey, toasted wood, nutmeat, yellow flowers and dusty earth tone. In the mouth the texture is just fantastic, bright and balanced with intense yet tense and focused mandarin orange, apricot and fig notes that are framed with just a hint of almond and measured oak notes. The finish is fruity, clean and crisp with refreshing acids and a delicacy to the flavors that makes this a winner for geek and novice alike. 93pts

Rosemary and bright minerality on the nose, the mouth has nice soft acidity that is front-loaded, with a moderate metallic and buttery finish.

One hell of a good Chardonnay; it's definitely oaked but done so well: lots of charred and roasted nuts, a little vanilla, and concentrated peach and apple underneath that keeps one coming back from more...

Very open vanilla/bubblegum nose, with banana and roasted nuts. The flavors transition into the mouth really well, and it ends in a buttery finish and a note of grapefruit.

Slightly creamy aromas of apples and pears. Good acidity, baking spices and vanilla, a little bit of orange peel, and a zesty and spicy finish.

Notes: One of our finest vintages of Estate Chardonnay ever, this wine displays alluring aromas of green pineapple, white tea, ginger, Meyer lemon and honeysuckle. On the palate, flavors of ripe pear are supported by lovely weight and a creamy texture. Vineyards: Five blocks of Chardonnay are planted in the well-drained, benchland soils. The famous Gauer Upper Barn clone, one of California’s most sought-after Chardonnay selections, comprises 80 percent of these vines. The 2015 Estate Chardonnay is crafted primarily from a mix of Gauer, Robert Young and clone 4 fruit. From the Gauer clone, the Chardonnay derives flavors of Asian pear, spice and a natural nuttiness, the Robert Young grapes add lovely acidity and the clone 4 grapes contribute mild tropical flavors. Winemaking: Though 2015 delivered the earliest harvest in our history, and very low yields, the quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. A warm winter and spring led to early budbreak, flowering and veraison. High temperatures in August further accelerated the pace of harvest, but with yields down by as much as 20 to 30%, everything was able to ripen beautifully, delivering lovely intensity. We began picking our Chardonnay in mid-August and were done by September, with average Brix of 21.5 to 22.0˚ Aging: Aging occurred in both barrels (80%) and larger casks (20%), all of which were French oak (5% new). Fermentation: The wine was fermented sur lie for 8 months and underwent 80% indigenous malolactic fermentation. Alcohol: 13.9%

Vineyards: Stuhlmuller Vineyards is located at the southern edge of the Alexander Valley, where it converges with two other highly regarded Sonoma County appellations, Chalk Hill and the Russian River Valley. On its eastern edge, the 150-acre vineyard borders the Russian River. Situated in a unique location that is part river benchlands and part hillside, the vineyard benefits from its alluvial gravel soils and the more rocky soils that comprise the hillside. The Clones: Five blocks of Chardonnay are planted in the well-drained, benchland soils. The famous Gauer Upper Barn clone, one of California’s most sought-after Chardonnay selections, comprises 80 percent of these vines. The 2014 Estate Chardonnay is crafted primarily from a mix of Gauer and clone 4 fruit. From the Gauer clone, the Chardonnay derives flavors of Asian pear, spice and a natural nuttiness, while the clone 4 grapes contribute mild tropical flavors. The Vintage: In 2014, a very mild winter and spring resulted in early budbreak and bloom. While drought conditions continued in 2014, some extremely well-timed spring rains helped achieve a good moisture profile in our estate soils, and contributed to exceptional quality fruit. While everything happened earlier in 2014, a good size crop slowed the overall pace of ripening, ultimately providing approximately the same amount of hangtime as a normal year, but with the fruit coming into the winery well in advance of any fall rains. Winemaking: For complexity and texture, we did a traditional pigeage for two to three hours, and allowed one-third skin contact. To accentuate the signature fruit and natural nuttiness of our estate grapes, we also fermented this wine with 100% indigenous yeast. Aging occurred in both barrels (82%) and larger casks (18%), all of which were French oak (6% new). The wine was fermented sur lie for 8 months and underwent 80% indigenous malolactic fermentation. The Wine: This medium-bodied wine offers an alluring orchard-fruit nose of ripe peach, and pear, as well as notes of lemon candy, honeysuckle and wet stone minerality. The lovely fruit continues on the palate, where it is accentuated by harmonious acidity, subtle oak and hints of lemon cream and sweet thyme. Alcohol: 14.1% pH: 3.50 Total Acidity: 5.9 g/l

Fermented without added yeast in older French oak barrels and casks (only seven percent is new wood), this wine has a mild toastiness from lees aging and a clean exposition from beginning to end. The mellow citrus flavors and tight acidity keep it lifted, while the unctuous texture would match rich fish, like grilled Spanish mackerel. This is our lowest alcohol Chardonnay to date. As a result it offers beautiful citrus and lemon custard aromas as well as lovely orchard fruit notes. Flavors of green pineapple, pear, orange blossom and apple are revealed on the palate, supported by bright, food-friendly acid and subtle textural notes imparted from the French oak and sur lie aging. - Winery Technical Notes: Alcohol: 13.7% pH: 3.45 ...

Made in the drier, leaner, earthier and more Chablisian style that's increasingly popular, this Chardonnay is a natural for food pairings, such as shellfish. It's a minerally wine, with elegant citrus, kiwi and pear flavors and a streamlined complexity. - S.H. The 2009 Chardonnay Alexander Valley is a big-production item of 8,400 cases. A classic California Chardonnay showing notes of white peach, a bit of honey, and background oak, it is medium to full-bodied and possesses some interesting minerality. Pure and impeccably well-made, it is a delicious, full-throttle Maconnais style of Chardonnay to drink over the next several years. An elegant show of ripe pear and honeydew melon thats medium-bodied, clean and pure. Smooth-textured and ready to drink. Drink now through 2014. 8,400 cases made. -JL

Starting in 1998, Fritz Stuhlmuller gives us his Estate bottled, classic California-style Chardonnay. Baked apples and stone fruits partner with touches of oak and vanilla. Pair with chicken in a butter cream sauce.
