Stryker Sonoma Zinfandel Russian River Valley Bisordi Lane 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Untitled Document 2005 Bisordi Zinfandel; Russian River ValleyClub Price $22.40 - Regular Price $28.00 Someone once referred to zinfandel as the "happy berry." It might also be called the genial grape. Either way, this good-natured, multi-faceted varietal never fails to titillate the senses and stir the imagination. Our 2005 Bisordi zinfandel lives up to its reputation, a singular wine that seems to metamorphosize in the glass. Woody, earthy, and intense at the outset, the wine changes into a flurry of flavors moments later—lush dark chocolate, blackberry, and ripe plum.As this wine matures, it promises to become even more complex and luxurious, with its dreamy aromas, no-nonsense ripe fruit, and firm rounded tannins...A food-friendly wine that heightens the herbaceous accents of entrees such as marinated pork tenderloin, pepper steak, or beef medallions with Bernaise sauce.

The wine style of Stryker Sonoma is guided by a youthful enthusiasm and tireless dedication to the pursuit of quality and pleasure. We are a fun-loving group with a slightly irreverent attitude with respect to the traditional methods of producing and marketing wine. We go to considerable expense to grow and produce pure, balanced wines that are fully extracted, rich in complexity and exude depth of character. These wines are enjoyable in their youth, but also reward those with patience. The wines of Stryker Sonoma are truly handcrafted, making use of both old-world traditional methods and the judicious integration of modern tools designed to allow for gentler handling of both fruit and wine. Our approach is sometimes risky, but the resulting bold, forward style is what we like to drink and we have found a growing following that also appreciates these wines. Our philosophy is reflected in the design of our winery and approach to winemaking. Bold but thoughtful. A blend of traditional and modern. Efficient, but lively and spirited. Our wines, we hope, embody our hard work, attention to detail and the joy we take in making them. The focus of our winemaking efforts is centered around the Cabernet family of varietals. Nonetheless, we also have a keen interest in Zinfandel and Chardonnay. Our annual production is roughly 7,000 cases, consisting of many small lots averaging in size from 200 to 400 cases each. Most of our annual production is sold directly to consumers from the winery’s tasting room and through our mailing list and website. We are all a bit free-spirited and Bohemian by nature. Conventional rules, devoid of understanding or heart, hold no appeal for us. Guided by youthful enthusiasm and tireless dedication, we produce balanced wines high in quality, rich in fruit, and deep in character. Russian River. Not just for Pinot anymore! I have always enjoyed these quality zinfandels that defy conventional wisdom and come from the land of Chards and Pinots. I like Zin: new vine or old vine, each have their charms. However, "old vine" Sonoma fruit tends to have such depth and layers of flavors that I will often gravitate towards a label with this pedigree. Stryker uses two vineyard sources here. One is over 100 years old and the other - let's just say it is older than John McCain. Barbieri, the older of the two, falls into another of my passions: Field Blends. Long ago, farmers just picked their fields and made wine. The uniqueness and complexity came from all the different grapes planted in the vineyard. Barbieri includes my favorite, Grenache, along with the deep blackness of Alicante as parts of the Heinz 57 here. This makes for a complex blend which is truly signature Sonoma. A nose full of boysenberry, caramel, and pepper lead into all sorts of ripe red fruits, chocolate Cherries Jubilee, and licorice. A rich mouthfeel leaves mild and sweet drying tannins with flavors of milk chocolate and plum before the Russian River acids leave you wanting more!
