Storybook Zinfandel Mayacamas 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

91 points Wine & Spirits: A fragrant, peppery zin grown in the hills northwest of Calistoga, this has energy behind its minerally black fruit flavors. It's a simple, charming red to pour with spicy lamb sausages or most anything else off the grill. 2,000 cases produced. (Feb 2013)

Mayacamas Vineyards is a wine estate located in the Mayacamas Mountains that divide the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. The old stone winery is perched on the edge of a dormant volcano crater near the top of Mt. Veeder. Fifty two acres of vineyards are planted on mountain sides ranging from 1,800 to 2,400 feet above sea level. Deer, eagles, coyotes, cougars, foxes, bobcats, and an occasional bear still inhabit this rugged terrain. The winery was built in 1889 by John Henry Fisher, a German immigrant, who first worked as a sword engraver in Philadelphia and then became a pickle merchant in San Francisco. The winery was also used by his family as a summer home and as a ranch to raise and care for the horses he used to deliver pickles to his clients in San Francisco. He sold his wine by the barrel. The barrels were loaded onto horse drawn wagons, driven fifteen miles to the Napa River, and then transferred to ferry boats which took the wine to San Francisco where it was bottled and sold At Mayacamas Vineyards our objective is to make wine with as much flavor, complexity and character as grapes can deliver. Given proper care and enough time, we believe these make the most interesting and enjoyable wines of all. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Bright Zin berry fruit on the nose is layered over nicely integrated wood tone. Muscular and still aromatically tight this slowly reveals gorgeous herb spiced framing notes on the nose offering added complexity. A little compressed in the mouth though with a lovely core of rich earthy balsamic black cherry, black raspberry fruit. There’s also lots of peppery spice in the mouth with a fairly tannic profile this is youthful and chewy, and with plenty of acid as well ensuring a long life and plenty of evolution in the bottle. Not your typical modern Zin, this is more structured and has more cut than almost any other. 91pts
