Stonestreet Monument Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Monument is gorgeous and totally juicy. Blackberry jam, blueberries, savory herbs, tar, pencil shavings and sweet spices all burst from the glass in this deeply resonant, expressive Cabernet Sauvignon. Hints of mocha, espresso and vanilla linger on the finish. The 2010 includes a splash of Petit Verdot and Malbec to round out the Cabernet. Stonestreet is arguably the *greatest* undiscovered gem in the Kendall-Jackson portfolio."-Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The original concept for the Monument Vineyard originated in the early 1990s with a group of five Charles Sturt University Viticulture and Wine Science students. These were mature-age students, successful in their own professions who wanted to become seriously involved in wine growing. Economy of scale seemed to be the way to collectively achieve the individual goals of each of the group members, and so the Cana Viticulture Partnership was formed in which the investing partners have direct managerial control of the project. First thoughts were directed to cooler regions and the high altitude region near Orange in NSW. In recent years this district has developed a reputation for wines with intense flavours and complexity. In the 1950s the CSIRO established a pilot vineyard in the region immediately west of Orange in a slightly lower and warmer environment. This micro-climate offered the prospect of reliable and complete ripening of red grape varieties every year. The CSIRO wines showed great promise, but the times were different, and the research almost forgotten. Read less

Earthy and herbal with a suggestion of dry chili and lovely soil tones all layered over fresh berry fruit that is nicely framed with a touch of wood spice. This smells great. Surprisingly light bodied in the mouth with soft, ripe tannins and fine acids. This seems a touch dilute and while I’m loving it’s drinkability it does seem to be lacking a bit of depth of flavor. The finish is short and a little dull. How can a wine promise so much on the nose and come up this short on the palate. perhaps time will help flesh this out, though it is sort of pretty today. 89pts

Mineral and graphite on the nose, as well as ink and slight licorice. Richly structured with flavors of creme de cassis, juicy blackberry, dark cherry and sweet tannin. Pauillac-like in style. Nice! 10/8/11

A lovely Cabernet, ripe and delicious, yet complex enough to hold your interest. It’s just beginning its journey in the bottle. Very dark in color, with hard tannins, it has an immense core of blackberries and cherries. Give it at least 6–8 years, but it could still be rocking in 2022.

Good bright red-ruby. Cool aromas of blackberry, licorice, menthol and violet. At once ripe and dry, offering attractive lift to the cassis, cherry, tobacco and brown spice flavors. Finishes juicy and persistent, with dusty tannins and good floral lift.

Dark in color and full-bodied, this bone dry Cabernet is tannic and hard, despite having concentrated flavors of blackberry jam and black currant. It has plenty of structural integrity, and feels elegant in the mouth. Try holding it for a few years. If you drink it now, give it a few hours in the decanter.

Graham Weerts blends this wine from a range of blocks along the main ridgeline of the Alexander Mountain Estate, rising from 1,200 to 1,800 feet. In 2009, the fruit ripened to black cherry and chocolate depths, a dense, juicy and silken cabernet that needs little more than a thick-cut sirloin.
