External Reviews for Stonestreet Merlot
Although the 2001 Merlot (30,000 cases) is acidic, with hard tannin in the finish, I enjoyed its heady aromatics (chocolate, mocha, and smoke). Drink it over the next 4-5 years.
Young and firm. Has pretty core of currant, chocolate, berry and spice flavors, picking up a slight leather note on the aftertaste and finishing with firm tannins and good length. Best to cellar into 1998 to '99.
This chocolatey, smoky, lavishly wooded Merlot is a flamboyantly-styled wine. The color is a healthy dark plum. The nose offers up plenty of vanillin, smoke, and spice. It needs another 1-2 years of cellaring, but should drink well for a decade. Those readers without the patience to wait several years are advised to decant this Merlot 45 minutes before drinking.
The 1995 Merlot is potentially a bigger and richer wine than either the 1994 or 1993. It is powerful and rich as a result of the extended maceration (30 days on the skins) and slow fermentation (because of the use of natural yeasts). A blend of 84% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Cabernet Franc, this wine possesses exceptional potential. Moreover, it will last for 12-15 years.
